long wheel studs are only required when the threads do not engage 1x the diameter into the hex portion of the nut. (1/2" minimum engagement for 1/2" studs, 7/16" engagement for 7/16" studs..... etc.)

Many rims require shank type nuts, and the stock length stud threads do not engage at all into the hex portion. This is where you need longer studs. If the threads don't engage into the hex, the head could literally 'pop' off, and there's no meat holding onto the rim at this point.
