i have a some what stock 88gt with 80k miles on it. i am thinking about a supercharger or nitrous and i was wondering how big of a shot can my engine take right now without exploding or burning a piston?

I ran 10s for three yrs with stock block used 225 hp n20 for a while then 14psi novi with no problems. The main thing is having your tune correct and having the right parts to keep the fuel and air safe. Safely with good fuel pump or pumps and the right tune ya could run 150shot or 10psi with no problems at all. The blower would only give ya trouble in 100 degree heat. The 88 has forged pistons also so it can stand quite a bit of pressure. But its all in the tune!

Buckley is right, the immediate danger of runing a lot of juice or boost is in the tune.

However, be aware that if you put a lot of passes on a stock engine with a 225hp shot or 14psi boost, you will eventually break the stock block, even with a girdle. No ifs, ands, or buts it will happen.

Just wanted you to be aware.

Ran a nos big shot efi plate system with 250 shot car ran tens and ran very strong with minimal mods bone stock lower end cast iron 69 windsor heads that were ported, made maybe 5 passes untill I lost oil pressure, opened up motor to find block had cracke completly in half all the way down the center, from cam down.:)

But my car I built has had to many passes to count on same stock shortblock. Thats with 14psi cogged at that. I aint bsn it is still together after at least 50 10sec runs and couple 9.9os. The tune keeps em alive. I think you could get away with 150shot or 10psi easy and live along time as long as your tune is sweet!

Yes, the tune keeps out detonation which keeps catastrophic engine failure from immediately occurring. But, the stock block was never meant to consistently handle 450-500hp. The block will fail eventually (it may take 100 runs) in the manner described by Bounty Hunter, and when it does, you will lose many other engine parts.

If you need more evidence ask Larry Geddes, Dave Lanman, or Ski Humphries. All have gone through the same deal during the last year.

Just trying to help.
