Hey, guys. For those of you that know about Race Pages' rust bucket race car, the Smav, here's an update.
The 347 had some balancing problems that caused a chunk of mallory to shoot through the oil pan, but it's at Ford Performance Solutions right now getting all fixed up, along with some upgrades from Isky.
There's a pretty big ongoing debate around the ProMedia offices about the the Smav's performance, enough to have it ridiculed by most everyone that's cruises by my cubicle. I'm guessing it'll run 11.00s on motor, 10s on spray, but I'll let you guys judge. James thinks it will be a turd and his nice new '05 will beat it, I think he's dreaming. What do you think?
Weight: 2,700 lbs with driver
Cubic Inches: 347
Heads: AFR 205s
Intake: Vic Jr.
Cam: Mech. flat tappet. .560 lift, 260 degrees at .050.
Compression: 10.5 to 1
Trans: C4, with a transbrake
Converter: TCI Street Fighter [3300-3500 stall]
Rear: 8-inch with 4.10 gears
Exhaust: 1-5/8 primary header, 3-inch x-pipe
Suspension: Drag shocks with Competition Engineering Slide-a-Links
Tires: BFG Drag Radials
Power Adder: 100 shot of spray, button activated

i would guess it does not make it the full 1/4mi pass :D lol.... it should go 12.50-12.20s on motor and 11.0s on 100shot. hope it does better then my guess. robert b. (the anvill).

It'll hold 250 if you're careful with the tune, Snake.

I don't think mid to high 11's are out of the question, IMO. I had brand x pickup that was 3100lbs with driver go 11.teens over and over with no problem. It had a 10.5 to 1 383ci small block with Dart heads and mechanical roller cam with more lift but similar duration as the Smaverick cam. Just my thoughts. Good luck.

Here's a shot of the newly re-built Smav powerplant. Thanks FPS!! My old rotating assembly was 70 grams off! Think that was stealing some horespower? Ha ha.
Check out the battle scars on the oil pan.

The Smav's Hit List:
NMRA James: Project H@LY$#*! > A car that will be sold before we can race
NMCA Phil: Project LS-Wonder > An automatic SS Camaro with bolt-ons and drag radials, 8.50s in the 8th.
NMRA Paul: Project Killer Panda > White and Black '86 Fox with a TFS headed 408, no time yet.
NMRA Donut: The Fecus > A stick Roush Turbo'd Focus, 8.90s in the 8th [guess]
Bring it.

NMRA James: Project H@LY$#*! > An automatic 2005 with a blower and drag radials, 7.30s in the 8th. I know I will be smoked by him, but I'll try.
It's big of you to admit you're going to get your ass kicked by the boss, Jake. Didn't think you had it in you...

Cool, another mavaholic sounds like a decent combo should run low low 12's maybe 11.90's and with a good tune on spray 11o's. thats where my mav with a 302 ran.

I'll run you... I run low 8's in the 8th... Bolt-on 2004 Mach 1. This season I am going to be spraying a 100 shot, too - so we can run either way - NA or N2O...
When will it be ready?
Smav347

I should have the motor back 1 week from today, so next week it should be running depending on how hard I want to thrash on it.

I think your right on. My 72 Maverick is really similar: 331 with AFR 205's, BFG 235/60 drag radials, totally stock 33 yr. old suspension except subframe connectors and cage, 3.40 gears, mini-spool, full interior, no spray, and footbrake w/ 4000 stall. Went 7.40's at Irwindale on first trip out, then 11.50's at Fontana, and 7.29 at Qualcomm. Trust me, you'll have lots of fun with it.:D

At that weight it should run bottom 11's to high 10's on motor and on spray even with only 150 shot it should run bottom 10's if not high 9's.
Good Luck.

Yeah I'd love to have BBF in that thing, but we'd have to totally change the front suspension, steering, etc. Plus I dont think the 6-point I have will hold that bucket together with that much torque down low, just yet. Like I told Scott, one day I plan on racing the car in the PSCA's Limited Street with a blow thru or something.

Hey guys, check out my new daily driver, The Rustang. It's a 4-banger, but it's got no dents, and I'm pretty sure I can get off all that surface rust. It also came with a 8.8 with 3.73s, a new Trac Lok, and a disc brakes all around. Now if I can just get it to stop overheating in traffic :D

Sent to Jake via email on 2/4/06 at 7:15pm:

Hey Jake, I agree on the lines of what the Maverick guys estimate. Maybe you need a little more stall. Are you running 26x10 slicks?
Go for the 150 shot!!! If I can get over 1.2 secs improvement with a 100 hp shot on my RatStang's 306 with those reworked e7s, your car should rock.
And Scott, don't do a Klass here please. I know you are not hum sut like him-maybe close but him....
See Pro Street, 4X4, Concourse, what's left? Maybe we should try and get you on Overhaulin'...
Hey I think your Rustang was somebody's abandoned attempt of converting to a V-8. They gave up and beached it.
And really, James Lawrence racing his own project car? I can say at least I got two motors combos through my RatStang and going for the third before HRP closes up....

I'm actually going to try to make it work with some 275X60X15 BFGs, but I also have some weird 28x9 ET Drags just in case. The Smav's actually going to put on hiatus until I can get the Rustang looking and driving good.I pick it up today from body shop.
And yes you're right, the Rustang was actually owned by a buddy of mine who was going to throw a 5.0L in it, but he's moving so he got rid of all 5 of his fox bodys to buy a house.
Just curious, I would need a computer, wiring harness, bellhousing, and a clutch to throw a 5.0L in it right?

Got spare V-8 T5 for the 5.0???
You want to buy some unused 1-1/2" shorties. Got them from eBay but since I got GT-40P heads for the cruiser motor, I got to change headers. The headers are brand new er.....what name brand? Get back to you one that with brand, condition (unused and sitting) and if interested $20 plus ground shipping-can buy some decently priced x-pipe (with your guys' connections) and make a ultra flo cat-back system. Make a sleeper- Gmachine Rustang....unless you are going gonzo on the Rustang....is there some sort of Ferreous Oxide metalic color...what color is the interior?

Paul H. [Editor of RP]: 350 :D
Donut [Associate Editor]: 410
Troy A. [Sales Guy]: 470
James L [Pres.]: 460
Jake [Tech Editor]: 480
What the 347 actually made: 530!!
That is, with help from the carb masters at Vrbancic Brothers Dyno and The Carb Shop. Before they tuned it the thing wouldn't idle whatsoever. We ran into a little oil leak problem, but we're going back hopefully next week to squeeze some more from it with the help of Trans Dapt/Hamburgers carb spacers.

So as some of you may know, the Smav's motor made 530 horsepower on 91 octane. Unfortunately we had the wrong rotating assembly in it and we spun a bearing. So now, we have a full-on Eagle forged h-beam 347 kit with slightly more compression, so we'll see if it can hold up. It also now has a windage tray from FPS so hopefully it will make even more power. Third times a charm right? Dyno day is in two weeks.

I did 4.91 to the 330 mark, did a 7.46 to the eighth mile (braking way early. I swear.), and was going 96 miles when I did this. And, I managed to cut a decent light (compared to some), .628.

SwillRacer

No way in hell it went 1.18 in the 60ft. Either that's a typo or a timing system error. Sam Vincent's SSO car 60's right around there and he weighs about the same as Jake's ride with about 3 times the HP.
However, a 7.46 in the 1/8th calculates to an 11.6 run in the QTR. Not too shabby for the first time out. I'll assume that is on the motor Jake?
Got your voicemail message finally, BTW. I just got a new celly this weekend and I'm not sure how it works. I could have read the directions, but that would be no fun. Yeah, a 1.81 60ft, a typo.
Today I went 1.790 to the 60 (left at 2000 rpm), babied it out of the hole and did 7.14 at 99.8 mph in the eighth. Every thing felt good so I thought I'd ride it out the back door. As I shifted into third, the back end started to drift towards the centerline going probably 110 mph. I then hit the wall and spun 180 degrees as the Smav puked its' guts. I crossed the finish sideways with a 11.23 at 107.
So yeah I crashed the Smav, but I had fun this weekend and it will be back in action again. I'll post some photos of the damage tomorrow.

I do plan on fixing it, actually I priced some fenders and bumpers this morning and it looks like it's not that expensive. I am still going to try to make the Super Bowl next year, but well see how long it takes to get a cage, brakes, a front end, and plenty of testing. I think I have enough time, but we'll see.
Despite crashing, I am really happy with how the car performed this weekend. I did that 7.14 at 100 taking it WAY easy off the line. It's a 10.90 car for sure.

Jake! Nice job of supplying Race Pages with many more Maverick "How To" article opportunities - "How to find a fender for a Maverick", "How to paint match the fender of a Maverick", "Staying in the Groove - 101", etc.
At least it's the easier to replace front fenders and not the rear quarters. Glad to hear that the only thing you bruised was your ego. And congrats on being one of the few editorial types who actually races - I'm jealous.

What do you have outback for suspension? Leaf Springs?
Smav347
10-26-2006, 09:06 AM
Yeah Scott, it was sick how easy I was taking it with the car. I didn't have it floored until 100 ft out!
Leafs on the back with traction bars.
Well I checked something out last night and I think I know how it happened. The front drum brakes were out of adjustment. At slow speeds the car would brake evenly (not pull to one side), I made sure of that the night before the race. But I think going that fast caused the car to pull hard to the right.
That, or I broke the mini spool, but the car rolls fine so I don't know... Oh and a buddy of mine is coming to do the cage next week. A fox body cage fits pretty good in a Maverick.

Thought you said you were going to run it out the back door up above? Did it get squirelly on ya and you hit the brakes? My 68 has all 4-drums and it pulls hard left when I nail the brakes. For future reference and speaking from experience, if the a$$-end gets loose on ya, lift off the gas and steer first, when it's going straight again, then hit the brakes....;)

Yeah I'm not going to paint this one, just leave the faded factory paint look. Also I was very skeptical about the 8-inch too, but I talked to a couple guys that race Mavs and they say the 8-inch can hold for quite a while. You have to remember guys, this isn't a 3000 lb. Mustang. A gutted Mav weighs 2500 lbs or less, so I would think that puts less load on everything right off the bat. I have and 8.8 for it eventually.

I'd say, "just come to the house and get mine," as it's in need of resurrection (actually, it just needs a motor), but I still have my 'Rick's "comeback" on the agenda as something I definitely need to handle at some point--sooner, as opposed to later. I might get after it when my coupe is completely finished. It's definitely an unassuming little scooter! The only "something's up" components are the Auto Meter Sport Comp tach, pedestal-mounted race shifter, and Holley Annihilator unit mounted on the trans tunnel. My charlies angles uh oops o mustang COBRA 2 had a 8 incher in it that i put a mini spool and 411 gears and did 1130s for two years with a 100 shot @ 3232lbs and never hurt it but everybody said its pure luck its a time bomb ready to blow then kaboom it was the driveshaft that blew when i hit 2 gear it broke in the back joint and cut holes in my floorboards it was freaky guess thats what cats feel when you put them in a metal trash can and beat on the lid ha ha ha (never did that) so i went to a currie 9+ rear and A1 driveshaft for peace of mind. Funny thing talkin bout mavericks when i got my rear from currie it didnt fit too small i called them and they made it for a maverick i was pissed after spending 2800 clams but they picked it up the next day back to cali and got it back two weeks later and perfect fit good service from currie enterprizes. They made full spools for the 8 inch for a while but stopped cause people started breaking the cases so the 9 was in.

What's up, Okster? I told you my 'Rick is clean as fok!:D Powerplant ideas have really run the gamut, bro. One minute, I've got the plasma fired up and I'm makin' room for a stroker Windzie, the next minute I'm thinkin' about really being different and dropping a high-revver, 12-second (12s in a 3,200lb 'Stang, I guess 11.?? or better in my 2,500lb Maverick) 289 between the fenders. Of course, there are also several 302 variants that are on the table as potential bullets.
Whatever it is, it'll be nitrous-compliant, of course.;)

Ha ha, what a coinkidink. here's a seak peak at next month's Project Car Update.
In the last Project Car Update that included the Super Smaverick we
mentioned that we crashed it going very fast (see sketch), seemingly ending this project's life forever. In a sudden change of heart I decided to
resurrect the car once again in hopes to get that 10.90 timeslip. This all
came about after many nights drinking in the garage, closely examining the
damage. We realized that the wrecked sections (basically the radiator
support) can easily be removed and fabricated by a chassis shop, and the
fenders, bumper, and hood? All will be fiberglass. And while we're at it
might as well slap a cage in the Smav too. We'd like to mention one thing
that inspired us to keep the car was this awesome sketch by Joe Sander. We came across his artwork while lurking on some Maverick forums and we just had to get him to sketch up an Outlaw 10.5 Super Smaverick, my ultimate goal for the car. If this guy can make a Maverick look this cool imagine what he could do with your pile. You can check out more of his work at www.joesander.com

Wow, thanks for the compliment! I didn't do much over the weekend because I was trying to get my buddy's Chevelle running, but I did start to install the front spoiler. The side you're looking at is only a mock up. I also mounted my DS-2s to my M/T fronts today.

That one is from Maverick Connection. It's fiberglass, I thought it was going to be plastic, but it turned out OK. The install was a little tough, but we got it to line up just fine. I noticed the other ones I've seen stick more forward, whereas this one points down...

Jake,
details on the motor please......girdle? valley girdle? filled block? Any other tricks? There is a stock block shootout class here that Marky Magnuson is starting around Chicago that you could dominate with that light-a$$ car!! I'll be out there some day with my D/D 89.
I got's to call you......been real busy.

Smav347
04-26-2007, 09:48 AM
It's a '68 Mustang block with a steel main girdle and valley girdle. I also have steel screw-in freeze plugs for it, but I didn't get a chance to install them. The block is not filled.
SwillRacer
04-26-2007, 10:02 AM
Does it have screw in freeze plugs now? That's expensive to convert I've heard(machining costs).
Smav347
04-26-2007, 10:11 AM
I have the screw-in plugs, the block is just not tapped yet. The tap is a 1-1/4 and it costs about 60 bucks. I think I'm going to get another stock block for a spare, hard block it, and have the plugs tapped. I don't think I'll push this block much harder than we did yesterday. This thing will run 9s on spray, I'm pretty sure.

I ran a stock 351W truck block, with no girdle, no nuttin, and a 300+hp plate. It wasn't happy but it lived all season. You just can't make tuning mistakes or you scatter parts. Just creep up on the tune up. Don't be afraid to run at least 150hp of spray. Anything under 200hp of nitrous is pretty forgiving on the tune up.

Wow, thanks for asking guys. The car is running great. I drove it to ProMedia today and I should be getting my traction bars tomorrow to get ready for a shootout between the Brownstorm and the LS-Wonder (11.50 LS1 Camaro) next Thursday. I was dealing with a major oil leak, but thanks to Jimmy Byrne and Jim Monson I was able to seal everything up (actually it still leaked a little after their suggestions, until I put a crankcase evac kit on it yesterday, now it's all good). I tested the transbrake last night and it goes up to about 3100 rpm, on nitrous it will flash higher. I think if it can go 7.30 in the eighth, out of the box, on motor (enough to take out the LS-Wonder), I'll be happy for now. It's got E/T streets on it now, and M/T rims and DS2 front tires.
I recently found a chassis guy that does some great work that will be doing the funny car cage in December.

So, instead of going to Vegas, I stayed home this weekend and worked a bit on the car. Resealed the oil pan, welded an exhaust hanger, and cleaned up some wiring. I also got a chance to scale the car too. Here's the results:
1,436 lbs. [ 51.3% front]
1,361 lbs. [48.6% rear]
-------------------------------------
2,797 lbs. [total, with me in it, and 50 lbs. of ballast in the passenger side corner]
I also was able to launch on the transbrake (3,000 rpm). It's going to take some getting used to since the force of the car launching caused my foot to lift off the pedal briefly, and my arm to pull 2nd too early. I've always raced off of the footbrake, so I'm going to have to practice the hell out of this to get it right. It hooks pretty good on the street though...

Hey good job Jake.
If you want to go throught the work, I mounted my TB button on a bracket that is mounted on the steering column. Painted it the color of the interior and it blends right in. The button is from Honeywell and you can adjust the release. I know what's the big deal...when ya let go, it's a natural reaction to grab the wheel, and the N20 switch, mounted on it. angle the bracket so your hand is in a comfortable position, looking at a clock, it might be 2:00 or 3:00, opposite for a lefty. Hey... Bitchin post number, matches my motor CID
Good Luck man,

A button on the column may work too. I still might use a 3-way toggle to switch between the line loc, trans brake, and the "bang button," I'm still not sure.

So I drove the bastard 54 miles (got a bit lost) on streets to the race in Fontana to shake down the car. The first past on Saturday I ran an easy 7.32 to the 8th ( 1.72 60 ft, shifting at 6,000) to get used to it and to make sure nothing would fall off. On Saturday we dropped the tire pressure to see if we could get it to 60 ft better and I planned on shifting it at 7,000 (which I still shifted it before the light came on, go figure).
Here's the video. I ended up lining up against Lonnie Patrick, which made my car look like a turd (pun intended).
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pmLa1o0AZS4
Here are the incrementals.
60 ft: 1.64
330ft: 4.65
8th: 7.17 @ 97 mph
1000: 9.37 (lifted just before marker)
1/4: 11.50 @ 97.99 mph
My question is, what do you think it would've ran if I would've stayed in it?

Oh you know I'm definitely down for that! Actually, I had already talked to Car Craft's Doug Glad about having a project car shootout, if we could get PHR to build a car that's actually fast we could have a four magazine shooutout... That Jake'll run anybody. One thing for sure, he ain't skurr'd at all.
No "hairstyle bets" for me, though. I don't think I want to put my style on the line over a best-of-3 match race. Jake can keep his "look" (you consider that scraggle on your face a "manly" beard, Jake?! Yeeeesh!) all to himself. Hah!
We'll see if we can one day get cars in the same place at the same time. Hell, we're all in SoCal, so I don't think it would be all that hard. They only let the really quick cars make singles at Jake's playground (Irwindale's eighth mile), so if we met up there, I guess we'd have to do some sort of timeslip comparo, 'cause I doubt we'd be able to run full out as a pair.

So I ran the car last night and was almost immediately kicked out for running a lifting 7.24 in the 8th. I was told I get one more pass, so I hoped to run 7ohs for the last hoora before the cage. So I moved the shift light up to 7800 (where I shifted my old motor) to see if that would do it, but I guess it didn't like that. I ended up throwing down a 7.19 (floating the valves, I think). Actually now that I think about it this morning, maybe it wasn't the valves because I forgot to move the rev limiter too, oops. Anyway, I still drove it home without any problems so I don't think it's hurt in any way. Also I think I need to get some baffles under my breathers because I think it's pulling oil through the exhaust (I have a crankcase evac).
The incrementals were:
60ft: 1.60
330: 4.68
1/8: 7.19 @ 98 mph
Also, look at the rear launch shot below, do you think the tire are cupping the center on this shot? it looks like it to me, maybe not enough air pressure? I had them set at 13psi. When I got back too the pits there was a "stripe" down the center of the tire.

Hi jake, car looks great! 1.60 is awsome on the motor. I can't get a good look at that tire but it almost looks like you are running too thin of a rim. what rim and tire combo do you have? 13 lbs. is not bad but it's my experiance that the wider the rim the less air pressure you have to run to be stable. that's part of the reason that the outlaw people runa 12 in. wide rim on a 10.5 in. tire. greg w.
Smav347
12-03-2007, 08:28 AM
Sean, I will be in Orlando on Wednesday.
Greg, you're right, it is on a pretty narrow rim, but the next time I take it out it will have the matching M/T rear wheels on it which are 2 inches wider I believe. Then I could probably get away with lower pressures?. I noticed the marks on the sidewall had a weird pattern too... I think the pressure was just straight-up wrong, but I can't complain about 1.60 on the car's fourth pass.
I also checked out the car this weekend and it turns out there were some things that were slowing me down too. The rev limit was too low (7200), and my "pedal stop" was a bit high (I'm using the stock cable setup, so it didn't actually go to the floor, until I made a bolt with a spacer bolted to the floor so I would have something to push against), so it wasn't WOT, I still had a 1/4-inch to go until wide open. Oh well, the car will be ready again in a couple months..

For sure, Sean. I'm looking forward to seeing your car next year too.
Here's a shot of the NANO system I just installed. And this week I'm installing an Auto Meter Ultimate II Playback tach..

Hey guys, my car is in line at the chassis shop. That's a carbon cowl hood mocked up and I have a fiberglas bumper that's going on. Oh, and it's getting 25.5'd up.
