Does anyone know how people are installing harden seats on the exhaust side of stock 428 heads. The heads do not have that much material for the seat, if you go much more that .25 deep you will be in the exhaust port. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

The exhaust ports on most FE's are goofy. I raced stock eliminator with a 390 and I've done some 390 and 428 CJ heads for stock and superstock so I know exactly what you are talking about. When you replace the exhaust seats, you will have some of the seat hanging out there with nothing under it. It is goofy but that is how it shakes out. With a superstocker, we fill that whole area up. It is dead space and kills flow. You will notice the aftermarket heads don't have that dead space. Also, there are some other FE heads that don't have that dead space under the valve. Anyway, if I were you, I would use the shortest seat I could find. Obviously, there needs to be some meat under the seat somewhere but it will you will break into the bowl in some spots. You might want to make sure the seat does not get into the short side radius. If it does get in there a little, "port" it out, meaning blend the bottom on the seat back with the short side radius. Its a good time to port those dudes out too. The FE's exhaust port leaves a lot to be desired. Sorry for rambling on. Gotta love those FE's!
