RP Digital Car Feature: George Seeger's EFI Renegade Car

The NMRA's EFI Renegade class has been one of the more competitive classes on the circuit with a slew of racers running deep into the eights and contending for the win at each race. As the class has matured, more and more racers are joining and running hard right from the start. One of those is George Seeger, a 31 year old out of Carlisle, Pennsylvania. When not taking care of his 2-1/2 year old son Caedon, he is the general manager of a sports/entertainment complex. Seeger ran a limited schedule with his 1991 Mustang GT during the 2005 season, but made it count with a Top Ten finish. The taste of success is bringing him back out for the 2006 season for some more racing.

If you talk to your average Mustang owner and ask about the cars they have owned you will often times get a lengthy list. Buying, modifying, and selling is a common staple in the racing world, except for Seeger. His 1991 Mustang GT was his first Mustang, bought back in 1993 and the only Mustang he’s owned until this day. What started out as a cookie-cutter GT with leather, sunroof and other amenities quickly made the familiar transformation to a hot street car. As Seeger put it, “The need for speed gained access to my blood. It became an addiction. I loved adding parts and testing them out on the street. Over time I turned my first Mustang ever into a 10-second street terror.”

Over time the car continued its evolution from street machine to racecar. “Street racing and doing a lot of bracket racing became my weekend norm but after many years of bracket racing at a local 1/8-mile track, I decided to step up and see if I would be able to compete in the NMRA.” After surveying all the classes, he stopped at EFI Renegade. “Renegade seemed to be a very fun and exciting class and at the time it seemed affordable. What an eye-opener that was!” The serious work began over the winter in 2003 and as Seeger put it, “Spending a lot of money, time, and doing a lot of testing netted us mid to high nines which was not even close to where we needed to be. I then had the opportunity to meet Brian Mitchell who pointed us in the right direction. He was a huge help!”

The 1991 Mustang GT enters the 2006 season as one of the top contenders in EFI Renegade. The car maintains a stock-looking theme with only a few changes to the factory exterior, most notably a Cervini Stalker hood and an Ed Quay rear spoiler. The car weighs in at around 3200 pounds and runs with a stock chassis setup with a ten-point S&W mild steel roll-cage certified to 7.50 that Seeger and his crew installed themselves. The engine is supported by a D&D tubular K-Member and A-Arms. A Flaming River manual rack setup handles the steering duties while the front suspension consists of Strange adjustable struts with a D&D coil-over kit. Out back you can find an RPM single adjustable anti-roll bar paired with UPR control arms and Strange adjustable shocks coupled with stock rear springs. The last stage in getting the power to the ground is taken care of by a set of Weld Drag-Lites wearing Mickey Thompson slicks. The end result has been sixty-foot times in the 1.27-second range.

The Renegade class mandates the use of a C-4 and working within that limitation is one of the challenges of the class. Seeger makes it work with the help of a Frank Lupo Proformance transmission coupled with a nine-inch converter, also by Frank Lupo. Seeger has been especially pleased with this setup, commenting, “Frank Lupo’s Dynamic Converter/Proformance Transmission really helped get the power to the tires. Frank and Shawn gave us an awesome converter, and I am looking forward to using their transmission this year.” The transmission transfers the power to a modified and welded 8.8-inch rear end stuffed with a Ford Motorsport spool, Moser 31-spline axles, and a set of 3.90 gears by Motive Gear. With speeds nearing 160 MPH, stopping is a tough task that gets handled by a set of Aerospace disc brakes in both front and back and the requisite parachute.

Power is the name of the game in Renegade and for Seeger, the power adder of choice is the venerable Vortech V-7 YSI, pushing upwards of 30psi of boost. The blower feeds a 309 cubic inch motor from Steve Poplaski that is built around a Ford R-block swinging a Callies billet crank, Carillo billet rods, and a set of JE pistons pushing 9:1 compression. The air and fuel are mixed courtesy of a set of TEA-prepped Edelbrock Victor Jr. cylinder heads fed by a TEA-prepped Holley Systemax intake, Accufab 75mm throttle body, and Granatelli 80mm mass air meter. When asked about the flow through the heads, Seeger replied “I believe they flow enough for right now,” in typical racer fashion. The valvetrain gets the job done with parts from Jesel and Del West. The motor is fed C-16 race fuel through a Weldon 2025 fuel pump and 160lb Ford Motorsport injectors. The exhaust exits through a set of Kooks 1-7/8-inch headers with 3-1/2-inch collectors and 3-1/2-inch bullet mufflers.

All the right parts will only get you so far. A wrong tuning move and it all turns into a collection of expensive paper weights. The tuning is handled via an MSD Digital 7 ignition and a DFI Gen7 system. The man inputting the tune is Dave Guy from Kauffman Motosports. “Kauffman Motorsports has been a big help in this program. They have stepped up to bat with Dave Guy and his tuning ability. He has made this car really fly!” added Seeger. In fact, the best ET so far has been an 8.71 at 158 MPH; pretty impressive in a rookie season.

Seeger is gearing up for his second season in Renegade and is looking to improve on his rookie campaign. Seeger finished eighth last season with impressive wins over Renegade veterans like Mike Post and Bob Kurgan. In order to compete at the top, Seeger and his crew know they have to step it up, “The goals for the car this year are to go 8.60’s or better,” noted Seeger. The crew members responsible for attaining that goal are Bryan Seeger, Jason Staub, Dave Guy, Matt Bagrosky, Toby Skvarka, and Ernie Kauffman. Several companies have stepped up to help the program with sponsorship, including Kauffman Motorsports, Frank Lupo's Pro-Formance Transmission and Dynamic Converters, Vortech Engineering, and FIT Engineering.

When asked about the 2006 Renegade class, Seeger was quick to point out the tough competition. “The Renegade class became very tough this year. There must be at least a dozen cars out there who could win any race any time. A lot of guys are spouting out 50’s and possible 40’s, but we will be consistent and they better bring their ‘A’ game against us. I am looking forward to the tough competition and all the smack talk. That part is always fun!” In order to compete for the Championship, the team is planning on running the full schedule in 2006 save for possibly one race. They have the right plan to contend for the Championship in that it’s not always the fastest who are left standing at the end of the day, but often who is consistently fast. With a veteran crew backing him and strong aftermarket support, Seeger is ready to put his hat into the ring for the 2006 Renegade Championship.
