Helmets do have a "shelf life," especially if they're stored any place where ozone or solvents are present. Both will degrade the energy absorbing foam inner liner over time. That's the main reason sanctions require periodic updates to helmet specs - a "Snell 95" helmet could be as much as 10 years old, and that's about as long as a helmet stored under perfect conditions can be expected to last. Personally, I wouldn't use a helmet more than five years old. They're cheap to replace, especially compared to your head.

a snell 95 is legal . i agree that there is a shelf life so to speak for the helmets but i would think that snell foundation took that into account when allowing helmets that old to be used . Also any tech inspector can fail a helmet if he or she feel that helmet has be damage (i.e drop or thrown , or in a crash )

A Snell 95 helmet can be as much as 11 years old by now - way, way too old to trust with your life. While obvious damage to the shell or the strap is gonna fail you out of tech, the critical energy-absorbing liner can deteriorate to the point of uselessness and still look like it's OK. Sanctioning bodies can't realistically ask tech guys to determine whether the liner is ok or not, so they mandate "Snell XX or newer" instead so that there's some assurance that the helmet isn't cosmetically perfect on the outside and totally rotted on the inside.
I've said it before, but it's worth repeating: Helmets are cheap. You'll never say, "gee, I wish I wouldn't have spent all that money on my helmet" if you have the opportunity to actually need it in a crash, guaranteed.

My head is so big I have to order a custom helmet and my wife says my head is so hard i really don't need one. Mine is not that old and this will be the first year that I going to put that cursed roll bar padding on getting tired of tech guys saying something about it. Now I spent enough car should go better than 150 now I got get a chute and learn how to pack that. Should have listened and stayed away from this racin stuff...nah gotta figure some way to keep myself in debted to the visa gods.
