I know you guys like to play it close to the vest and sharing helpful information may not always be in your best interest, but think of me as a community service you are providing. The community being mustang class racers on drag radials of course.

First let me give you a little background. Usually I’m one of those bottom feeding bracket racers. However, one of my local tracks has started an 8.0 (1/8 mile) heads-up class on a .500 tree restricted to drag radials. As you probably could have guessed this class is dominated by the bowtie crowd and I would like to crash their little party.

The problem is I have absolutely no knowledge regarding drag radials. The only thing I know for sure is that I will be getting BFG Drag Radials. I don’t know what size to get (have 8 in. Weld Drag Lites to mount them on), what tire pressures to run, or what suspension parts are needed to make them hook. This is where you guys come in. I know you wouldn’t want to stand by and idly watch as some local blue oval boy gets beat up weekly by the Chevy guys now would you?

Hope you didn’t mind my feeble attempt at humor but I would appreciate any opinions regarding Drag Radials and anything else you would be willing to share that will help me out. The rest of my mods are in my sig. Feel free to email or PM me if you prefer.

Thanks

Eddie

I managed to fit BFG 275/60 15's (28"tall) on my 91 LX. I needed to roll the fender a little and flip the quad shock, which I eventually just removed. At the time, my car was running just at 8.0's in the 1/8th, although setup forthe 1/4. I also used South Side Machine lowers and welded them so they had no roll. With that setup, I usually pulled 1.70's for short times, unless I really launched hard and then I could nab a 1.60 here and there.
Basically, with the torque boxes welded nicely and the removal of one shock per side, you can expect it to hook pretty well. I can't say what it would do today, as the setup is entirely different, except I still use factory rear shocks and springs. This combinaton seems to work better now, with adjustable upper and lowers. I pulled a 1.72 short on REGULAR radials! Only once though, and I really screwed up on that pass. Oh well, I've got ET Streets on now.
I'd also make sure you have sub-frame connectors and it's much nicer with a roll bar to stiffen the entire chassis. From there, it depends on the engine, tranny and gears you choose. And, of course, how well you drive. :D Good luck.
