Defending Diablo Sport Pro 5.0 Champ Don Walsh Jr. has the chance to do something nobody’s ever even dreamed of in NMRA competition – Take the crown in the fastest class in Ford doorslammer racing four years running. But this year, it’s going to be harder than ever – coming into the tour’s fourth stop at the 3rd Annual Toyo Tire NMRA Ford Nationals at US 131 Motorsports Park in Martin, Michigan, Walsh is second in points with only a single win under his belt so far. Who’s on top? Last year’s runner-up, Mike Hauf, but just 115 points separate the pair, and Chuck DeMory (winner of the previous race in Pennsylvania), Dave Schorr, and Burt Kelkboom are all poised within striking distance. This year, there’s no room for error in Pro 5.0, and Michigan could prove to be the turning point that determines the fate of Walsh’s quest for a four-peat. With three winners in three races, the chase is wide-open to see who’ll leave US 131 with the victor’s points in their pocket.
