It’s been a fantastic day for drag racing here at US 131, with mild temperatures and a well-prepped track that’s holding pretty much anything our racers can throw at it. Here’s a look at some interesting goings-on:
http://promediapub.com/filehost/files/3/us131/satvincent.jpgYesterday, we showed you the new Pro Stock-style hood scoop adorning Sam Vincent’s MSD Super Street Outlaw Fox-body. Today, Sam broke out a souvenir from the “incident” that put the big hole in his hood in the first place – a chunk of crankshaft. After about six grand in new parts, it’s hard to blame a guy for economizing on bodywork a little bit.
http://promediapub.com/filehost/files/3/us131/saturist.jpgWe predicted that Billy Laskowski’s 7.52 in testing yesterday wouldn’t last the weekend as the high water mark in SSO, and we were right. Today, John Urist ratcheted it down a hundredth to 7.51, but neither driver has been able to back it up for the official record. Yet. Both have a fighting chance at it in eliminations tomorrow.
http://promediapub.com/filehost/files/3/us131/satmagnuson.jpg5.0 Magazine Real Street driver Mark Magnuson is a racer who understands the power of creative marketing. Unless his car is on the bumper, you’d never see the 5.0 Resto or Bassani Xhaust logos, but we caught them clear as day.
http://promediapub.com/filehost/files/3/us131/satgroh.jpgRich Groh has really started to get his ProCharger EFI Renegade-spec nitrous combo to haul, proven by his 8.88 quarter mile time at a whopping 156 mph this weekend. Apparently the car was able to post that time with a very conservative tune-up. However, in the third round of qualifying the car died in mid-launch causing his crew guys (ex-Open Comp racers the Gillam Brothers) to scratch their heads. They should have the electrical gremlin killed in time for the first round of eliminations on Sunday.
http://promediapub.com/filehost/files/3/us131/satcarter.jpgNMRAracing.com forum regular Darrin Carter debuted his Tremec Pure Street ride this weekend and was able to break into the 10-second zone straight off the trailer. Unfortunately he broke his Pro-Shifted Tremec in the second round, but he has high hopes of being able to borrow a trans for eliminations.
http://promediapub.com/filehost/files/3/us131/sathalfacre.jpgJarrett Halfacre had an intercooler seam rupture during the second round of SSO qualifying, blowing out his passenger side window with a frightening-but-not-injurious “bang”. Before we had time to shoot the gaping wound, Halfacre’s crew already had the seam fixed and ready to rock in round three.
http://promediapub.com/filehost/files/3/us131/satcook.jpgBob Cook posted an impressive 8.71 this weekend, enough to hold the number two qualifying position in Renegade. He actually grenaded his C4 trans in the process, but luckily he had a spare for just such an occasion.
