I posted this in power adder forum, but then realized that a hot street guy would probably be able to answer my question pretty easily.

Just wondering how much vac i should be running with my vac pump. I have a 357ci windsor that i shift at 8k and trap at 8300. Any advice would be great..this vac pump thing is all new to me. Thanks

I would start at 14 inches. If you are pushing any oil out anywhere bump it up an inch at a time until it stops. Keep a close eye on your oil pressure at high RPMs if you notice any fluciation of the guage it is telling you you are pulling too much vacum. If you are pulling excess crankcase vacum at high RPM it will actually pull the oil out of the mains thus the flucation of the oil pressure. You may also suck the valve cover or intake gaskets in with excessive vacum.
You should have only 2 holes in your engine. One for the vacum pump and the other for your vacum relief valve. Other than these two the engine must be completely sealed.
I'm no expert just my experience.

We got rid of our vacuum pump and then we was able to get rid of the dip stick .I never really found the advanage of the pump wasnt worth the trouble or mess .Then again you didnt ask just my experience.......
