i could be wrong but i think

the numbers are a year to which the specifications and classifications to which the helmet was manufactured to.

i.e.

snell m2000 means that the helmet was constructed according to regulations set forth in 20000

snell m2005 means the helmet was constructed according to regulations set forth in 2005

i would go with the snell m2005 helmets. probably constructed a little better

From what I understand, there's not a big difference between the M2000 spec and the M2005 spec. But, a helmet that's tagged M2000 can be 6 years old and still sitting on the shelf, while one rated M2005 will be, at most, a year old.

The energy-absorbing liner in a helmet does deteriorate over time, and even a sealed-in-the-box, never-worn helmet that's 10 years old won't perform like it did when it was brand-new. Throw in the ozone, sweat, heat and cold, gasoline fumes, carb and brake cleaner vapors, and banging around that a racer's helmet is exposed to, and I wouldn't trust a helmet that's been used for more than 3 or 4 seasons. That's the main reason why sanctions update their helmet requirements - to make sure that they're reasonably "fresh".

One of the story ideas we have in the pipeline for '07 is a visit to the SFI foundation. Since they're in the helmet spec business now, too, I'll have to ask them about it.

In Bowling Green I was told this would be the last year I could use mine. It has a 95 rating and the Tech guy said helmets are only good for 10 years.

I don't know if this is a new thing. It's the first I've heard of it but it makes sense.

As a side note,you would think a 2000 would be cheaper than a 2005.

Go with an SA rated helmet over an M. They are designed for different types of impacts....
