Well here is the deal. I was at tech last night and they had an issue with my shoulder harnesses being wrapped around my cross bar. I was told that is not consider a legal mount unless there is a bar welded to the cross bar to prevent lateral of the harness.

Has anyone else run into this issue?

Thanks

I believe that was a rule revision imposed in 2006.

Not really in the rule book. It says it must be mounted. The Tech said wrapped around is not considered mounted unless the harness is boxed in to prevent it from sliding on the cross bar. I asked about seats with harness guides and was told the harness still has to be boxed in regardless of the seats.

I am trying to install 5 pt. seat belts in my car and I cannot find these brackets to keep the belts from sliding either. You would think the required hardware would be availible from the belt makers.

You have to fab up something or weld a tab on.

Here is my solution with some parts I had around.

Isn't that a crotch strap mount? I guess if it works and passes tech inspection you got a good solution. Thanks for the info!

Yes it is. The crotch strap bracket is not legal to mount the belt.

I had it powder coated and never used it.

I didn't want to weld and kill the powder coat.

It actually looks good in the car.

The NHRA Race Director said it is fine.

I have a second bracket that is black powder-coated if you need one.

I'm supprised they didnt say the holes need to be sleeved.

They told me that any hole with a bolt through it needed to be sleeved so you dont crush the bar while tightening the nut.

Isn't it legal to mount the crotch strap to it? I just bought two so that I could mount the crotch strap w/o drilling a hole through the weak floor pan.

That is true. I was told to sleeve the holes or use a nylon nut and don't over tighten the bolt. You would really have to tighten the bolt down to crush the cross bar. I did not use a sleeve. I wanted to keep the hole size to a minimum.

The crotch strap must be mounted behind your chest line. You may get away with the brackets, but I can't at my track.

Will the crotch strap bracket (like the one you show to keep your belts from sliding) bolt to the rear seat track mounts? If so this would comply with the rule of it being behind the chest line? Will the crotch strap reach that far?

It looks like it would work as long as your seat has a cutout for the crotch strap. It will not work on my car because the strap is not long enough. An eyebot and a backing plate works fine also.

One more question. How long is your crotch strap? The one I am looking at is from Simpson and is 27" long. Is that the standard length of all crotch straps?

I guess that is standard.
