Right up until it goes KABOOM!:D Really though, I would say 75-7800 with the stock crank and that is pushing it. I know you will get others to say more but it won't last for long. The stock block with good internals will go further though, but you risk cylinder wall distortion at higher RPM's.

with my old heads and cam setup, I was shifting mine around 6800 oops on 7000 or so once or twice. Long story short, messed the heads up and well the same stock shortblock (w/190,000+) on the clock are still in the car and running strong.
but yeah what teddy said

thanks guys. i'm working on a PS car, i'm trying to decide where to start. i have a dss pro bullet from a few years back, so i don't know the weight of the pistons. i was going to start with a good set of rods this year and go from there. any suggestions on a good set to buy? or anyone have a used rotating assembly their willing to part with. thanks

On a budget level the Probe I-beam rods are a good lightweight rod. If you have the money and time the Crower rods are the best to run. I suggest consulting a reputable engine builder and doing it right the first time, not halfassin it then doing it over, it will save you tons of$$$$$$$$$$$$$ in the long run;)

I ran my stock 87 85,000 mile block/ crank for three seasons after building it. The motor was a stock 50oz set-up with a stock nitrated crank, Probe rods and Diamond 400 gram pistons. I shifted at 7,100 rpm launching the car often higher than that. Never had a problem until it popped the head off a valve...it went 10.60's-10.70's a few years ago. Good luck...it's a great class to run!
