In the words of the post card we picked up in the gift shop at the airport, “The weather’s here – wish you were beautiful!” The pits are overflowing with cars, and we’ve already seen some amazing performances here in Bradenton at the 6th Annual Nitto Tire NMRA Spring Ford Nationals. We’re winding up the test-and-tune session, so here are some highlights from today’s action.

Manny’s back, and there’s gonna be trouble… When we saw Buginga’s coupe roll through the gates, we knew there was going to be some stiff competition in MSD Super Street Outlaw, seeing as Buginga posted some crazy non-NMRA-legal numbers last year. He proved us right, as he came off the trailer and clicked off an amazing 7.45 at 193.50 miles-per-hour. SSO is going to be a class to watch this weekend!

In other SSO news, the look on defending champ John Urist’s face says it all. A burned piston in testing yesterday, coupled with Sam Vincent’s nitrous-fueled 7.46 on Wednesday and Buginga’s .45 today mean that it’s not going to be an easy weekend for the Fireball.

The incumbent BF Goodrich Tires Drag Radial champion, John Kolivas, is on the property and has been testing since last night. This evening, he was able to make an 8.12 at a blistering 175.50 miles-per-hour. Looks like he hasn’t been sleeping in over the winter, and is going to keep it interesting this weekend.

The best DiabloSport Pro 5.0 run we’ve witnessed so far belongs to Mike Hauf, who made 6.63 at 211 look effortless in the cool evening air. There’s going to be plenty of competition, though, as the top drivers in the class fight for that Vortech shootout bonus cash.

Finally, we’ll leave you with this shot of Jeff Schmell – it’s unique because it’s the first one we can remember taking where he doesn’t have duct tape blocking off his factory hood scoop!
That’s it for today’s Bits from the Pits. See ya tomorrow for more test-and-tune, and first round qualifying action.
