Check for fuel starvation. dropping fuel pressure or a pump going bad.

Check the rev limiter LOL
Not enough fuel, bad ignition, too hot spark plug, too rich, too lean.
My engine (14.1 compression 393) would spit and sputter in 3rd gear around 5500. I changed Power valves, Jets ect. I had NGK number 6's and I went online and checked out a few sites that show you how to read a plug... Sure enough I had too hot of a plug, switch to a NGK #8 and it runs up to 7200 RPM without a hicup.

I had the pro comp 225's and had the same problem. It dropped a valve in garage at idle changed springs to comp cams set up and still would not rpm & blew a head gasket.
Changed heads (the fix) same springs & valves no problem.
