It’s been a beautiful day here in Columbus, with temperatures in the high 70’s, low humidity, and a light breeze – perfect ingredients for quick ET’s, if the racers can get the track to cooperate. We’ve gotten one round of qualifying in so far, with the other two scheduled for tomorrow, and the forecast is for more of the same. Here’s a few of the goings-on here at the track today:

After mortally wounding his motor in Atco, there was simply no time for MSD Super Street Outlaw racer Sam Vincent to get a new motor together for Columbus. Instead, he’s here in a crew chief capacity for Hot Street racer Tim Eichhorn. It remains to be seen how his absence from the program this weekend will play out in the very tight points chase.

Australian BFGoodrich Tires Drag Radial racer Joey Bridge is back after a short hiatus. When we stopped by his pits, we noticed that his engine bay had changed; back in the grille was his reliable 85mm turbo and all new charge piping. With the potential shown by his 4-valve combo, and the proven speed of the 85mm in general, we’re expecting big things from the Aussie.

You may have heard that BFGoodrich Tires Drag Radial racer Bob Kurgan was recently involved in a bit of a scrape. You may have heard that his iconic four-eyed T-top hatch was a write-off. You may have heard that he threw together another car in time for this race. You’ve heard wrong on at least a couple of counts. Yes, the Flyin’ Hawaiian is here this weekend, and yes, it took an epic flog to make it happen, but the car he’s driving is the same one he’s had all along, after a whole bunch of chassis, body, and paint work. Seems like the car is pretty straight; straight enough to carry Kurgan successfully out of the first round of the TCI Shootout against Joey Bridge today, for sure.

Speaking of the Drag Radial shootout, we’re down from eight to four, with Chris Tuten defeating Kevin Fiscus, John Kolivas winning against Jason Lee, the aforementioned fall of Joey Bridge to Bob Kurgan, and a little bit of an upset with Tony Akins coming out on top in his matchup with Chad Doyle.

That’s it for today – if you’re within driving distance, better get in the car right now and hit the road so you don’t miss tomorrow’s qualifying sessions!
