Hoo boy – lots of delays today for track cleanup, but fortunately, only one real crash, with SSO driver Perry Santini getting loose and brushing the right wall on the top end during the third round of qualifying. Here’s a bit of what all you guys on the couch at home missed…

It’s been a rough weekend so far for BFGoodrich Tires Drag Radial racer Chris Tuten, with transmission problems costing him a shot at the big money in the TCI Shootout during qualifying. It’s not all bad news, though – after his torque converter suffered a spontaneous disassembly incident, a borrowed unit from none other than his arch-rival John Kolivas got him back into action.

Farmer Steve Gifford laid down the fastest pass ever in the history of K&N Factory Stock with an 11.329 at over 118 mph in the second round of qualifying. In the third round he was a tick over a hundredth of a second away from backing it up. With his string of top qualifier honors this year, could this be the breakout event when he finally takes an end-to-end win?

Race Pages Associate Editor Jason Reiss is here today ‘on vacation’. He piloted his ’99 Lightning – project Trash Hauler – to a high 13-second average in Hedman Hedders True Street. We’ll see if he can go some rounds in brackets tomorrow.

Roush Performance Modular Muscle veteran Zak Harty ran into some trouble right before the event when he fractured his rearend housing during testing. For points, he borrowed fellow Mod Muscle racer Jim Gilmour’s S197 GT, hoping to go some rounds tomorrow.

Fireball John Urist was the only driver in SSO to be able to get his car to hook up last night in the first round. In the second round he bested his previous effort, running a 7.48 at over 190 mph, but he’s got some ground to make up if he he wants to catch top-qualified Jarrett Halfacre, who nailed an astounding 7.447 at 195.59 in the third round.

We caught up with 5.0 magazine Real Street racer Jim Breese this morning, as he was preparing to yank his primary bullet and see what they could do about engine oil the consistency of a chocolate milkshake. We’re pleased to report that Breese was back in action later in the day, and is a ‘go’ for eliminations tomorrow.
That’s it for today – catch you tomorrow for eliminations here at National Trail Raceway!
