In the FS rules, it indicates the following:
AOD Transmissions may deduct 100 lbs. from base weight
2.14 AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS
(OEM American transmissions or replicas of OEM American transmissions that use planetary gears)
AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS: Ford AOD, Ford AODE, 5R55S, and 4R70W transmissions with torque converter are required. Transbrake permitted. Overdrive gear may be removed. Pneumatic, electric, hydraulic, etc. shifters prohibited.
Does the weight break ONLY apply to the AOD...or the whole AOD family of transmissions?

Sounds like that needs to be clarified in the text, eh?

I'd agree with that! It would be pretty disappointing to show up with a FS car that has an automatic other than an AOD...then be told it's not allowed.

Only AOD's,4R70W and 5R55S are allowed. This is how it's been for as long as I can remember. No other style automatic transmission is permitted.

Thanks Jeff...just wanted to get it clarified.

Man if someone could get a 5R55S to work in a F/S setup.....that would be interesting. Mine slams through the gears.

The question is does the power it loses even out with the 100lb weight break?
I dont think it does.
I think it was atleast 20hp less then a stick in a f/s setup. And that was with a top of the line len tech.

It must, otherwise the rules committee would have given more of a weight break so the car could be competitive with the stick cars! On the other hand if what you are saying is true…maybe a campaign should be started to give more of a weight break to an automatic equipped F/S car. Has anyone in recent history run an automatic in Factory Stock…and how did it fare?
No doubt an auto typically shows less horsepower on a dyno, but in my opinion, the real money is made with the tune, setting up the trans parameters for what best suits the car, and torque multiplication and stall of the converter. Lentech makes an OK transmission, but better can be had for sure.
Not an attack on you by any means…just my opinion :)

The main thing is the cost...at about a $1000 a piece for a converter, trying to find the right one is going to get expensive...Who else makes a race AOD? At what cost? A good T-5/G-Force is a little over a $2K...and the clutch/flywheel will last about all season. It's good to have a backup T-5, a used one is around $1500, for a good one.

They just gave the aod the weight break back. It would need atleast 200lbs off to come close.
A few guys tried it and went back to a stick.
Not only in F/S, but P/S as well.
I dont think others can do what Len does for an aod. Go see what he offers then the rest.
It would be nice to see a aod come close to the stick cars.
Good luck.

They just gave it back alright…they made it more restrictive to run an automatic. For 2006, a 2V Modular with ported heads and an automatic had to weigh in at 2950 pounds. Base weight was 2900 pounds with a deduction of 50 pounds for and automatic and an increase of 100 pounds for ported heads.
For 2007, a 2V Modular with ported heads and an automatic had to weigh in at 3000 pounds. Base weight was 2950 pounds with a deduction of 100 pounds for and automatic and an increase of 150 pounds for ported heads.
For 2008, a 2V Modular with ported heads and an automatic had to weigh in at 3025 pounds. Base weight was 2950 pounds with a deduction of 100 pounds for and automatic and an increase of 175 pounds for ported heads.
It’s as if NMRA does not want automatic cars running in Factory Stock…they keep making it more restrictive, yet no one is running an automatic or has run one in several years. Or maybe it’s because the class sponsor is ACT Clutch. I didn’t know the automatic was such a threat.
How could an automatic ever be competitive at that weight?

Ok well run un-ported heads then you will be 275lbs lighter than say Steve's car. Oh and the ACT part has nothing to do with it as the rules were out before ACT signed the papers to be the class sponsor I believe. It is gonna take data to sway them to change the rules, until someone puts forth a true effort there is no reason for them to change a rule based on people's thoughts on what it will take to compete. So come on out a give it a try and gather your data and then ask for a change of the rules;)

I hear ya Brandon...just trying to provoke some thought. So when is a 2V head considered ported? Bowl cleanup OK? How about runner cleanup? NMRA discretion?

I would call anything more than blending the valve job porting.

Your not talking 4R70W, thats for sure. I think the auto may have a chance, slim......:p

You better be really good with a cutter to blend the valve job!!!!!!!
Blending with anything but the cutter is considered PORTING!!!! :)
