Can anyone give a yes or no on weather or not they are mandatory? I don't have them and do not want them...unless I absolutely have to. It does not mention them in the rules.....

I ran the Bowling Green event last year, my car had all the "required" equipment but wipers. My car has an extended cowl hood - so I can't run them. Nobody said anything about not having wipers, and I was allowed to run.

Thanks for the reply. I have the same thing. I have no room behind my cowl for wipers and do not plan on cutting the hood. Has anybody else ran without them? Again, if they are required they should state it in the rules that you have to have them.

don't qoute me, but I thought the rule was you have to have the wiper motor installed and wired up, but you don't have to run wiper blades.

Let's look at the rulebook, shall we?

During the tech-in process, vehicle must have operational street equipment, including headlights, taillights, brake lights, turn signals, and horn.

The list excludes wipers. While the tech department has the final say, it would seem to me that a strong argument could be made that if you had to have them, they would be on that list.

Or they could say it fits under "operational street equipment"

It DOESN'T say "including, but not limited to." It says "including."

This is where I feel the rulesmakers out-clever themselves. You have to have operational windows, because it specifically says you have to have operational windows (in an earlier, unquoted section). You have to have headlights, brake lights, and turn signals, because it specifically says you have to have them. Once you start calling out what's "street equipment", you have to be very clear about EXACTLY what is required. Otherwise, all it becomes is a mechanism to piss off paying customers for no good reason.

Very well said! I agree. No wipers for me.

I suggest having at least the driver side wiper operational you never know when a thunder storm might pop up on the 30 mile cruise and without wipers this is a safety issue. ALL 50 STATES REQUIRE THAT ALL VEHICLES THAT ARE REGISTERED IN THAT STATE HAVE ALL THE REQUIRED SAFETY EQUIPMENT AND WIPERS ARE CONSIDERED SAFETY EQUIPMENT.

We need to get that into the rulebook then. I'm sure that every VC also requires a working parking brake and operational backup lights. Are those required too? What about rear and side-view mirrors? Also required by VC.

I have an extended cowl also, and working wipers. It does not take much to keep them (in weight, work, performance, aesthetics) and since I like to drive my car to work, around etc.. being caught in rain is just dangerous without them. I say you should have at least a drivers side blade for the cruise, even if you are allowed to take it off for the 3 runs.... my 2 Cents :) . These little things are what keeps the purpose built bracket tincan from ruining this class.
