It’s been a long 14 hours for us here at Milan, but the sun is finally setting and we’re wrapped up for the day. After yesterday’s rain the weather couldn’t have been any better today, and we’re anticipating another full day of racing action tomorrow. In the meantime, here’s a couple of tidbits to tide you over.

Making a triumphant return to the NMRA’s 5.0 Mustang Magazine Real Street class is Bruce Hemminger. Finishing second in the class last year, Hemminger took the first two races of the season off, but after testing at home, felt his combination could be competitive here at Milan. He made the trip out from his Channahon, Illinois home to take his first shot of the season at the Real Street glory.

In a shocking turn of events, former Factory Stock champion Shawn Johnson has dropped the Real Street combination out of his car and installed a fresh Modular Performance Pure Street bullet between the framerails. Of course, any time combinations are changed, new car bugs persist. Modular Performance guru Mike Tymensky is on the property to help Johnson sort out the car, and there aren’t too many guys with as much naturally-aspirated Mustang seat time as Johnson.

After years of trying, the first seven-second pass has finally been made at an NMRA event in BFGoodrich Tires Drag Radial. John Kolivas jumped right on it this morning in the test-n-tune session, running a 7.99 at 178mph (CHECK MPH) to lay claim to being the first guy to do it at an event. After making the run, he went directly to the Tech Department to have his fuel and weight checked, where all was found to be kosher. Sadly, Kolivas was unable to duplicate his performance in the heat of the day, but all of the bragging rights are his for the time being. Will he be able to run the number tomorrow during eliminations? Only time will tell…

This year’s Ford Media Invitational bragging rights belong to Mustangs & Fords magazine’s Mark Houlahan, who bested Dave Freiburger in the finals. Incidentally, our own Jason Reiss was taken out by Freiburger in the second round on a double-breakout, but at least he got past MM&FF’s Evan Smith in the opening battle.

Racers and fans all got an unexpected surprise today when Jack Roush (yes, that Jack Roush) made a couple of passes over the track in his Mustang (of the P-51D variety), flanked by two AT-6’s.

That’s it for today – we’ll be back again tomorrow with complete results from the 5th Annual Aeromotive NMRA Ford Nationals.
