According to the 2008 NMRA rulebook, it indicates the following:

"Qualifying Information, Ladder Type, & Tree
The class will be qualified by positive reaction time (r/t) closest to “.000” based on a Pro .500 Tree. “.000” is considered perfect. Any negative r/t (-.001, -1.231, etc.) will be placed at the bottom of the qualifying ladder, the more negative the r/t is, the farther down the ladder the run will be placed. For cases in which identical reaction times are made, qualifying position will be based on a first-come first served: the first occuring r/t will be placed #1, the second occurance of said r/t will be placed #2, and so on. Class will be paired according to qualifying positions, and then advance to eliminations.

All Run, NHRA Sportsman Ladder, Pro .500 Tree, Handicap Start.

A 32 or less car field will be laddered on a sportsman ladder.

A 33 or greater car field is randomly paired and run until the field reaches 32 cars or less. When the field reaches 32 or less cars a sportsman ladder for the number of cars remaining will be used to pair the cars. Car placement on this ladder will be determined based on reaction time for the last round that was randomly paired.

If weather has caused the loss of one or more rounds of qualifying sessions, any entrants not qualified will be required to choose an index from the following list: 15.0, 14.0, 13.0, 12.0, 11.0, 10.0, 9.0 Competitor must submit their index to the race director on the last day of qualifying. Competitors will compete with their chosen index through eliminations. Any competitors who fail to submit their index on the qualifying day will automatically be assigned a 15.89 index."

From what I can see, the NHRA Sprotsmans Ladder was not used in Modular Muscle this weekend. Am I missing something? Please clarify...maybe there are alternate proceedures I am not aware of. Thanks.

I beg to differ…there are 2 NHRA ladders, the “Professional/Pro Sportsman Pairings” ladder, and the “Sportsman Pairing” ladder. http://www.nhra.com/ladders/

The question is...which one does the NMRA use?

OK, here's a picture to illustrate what I am referring to. Are my eyes deceiving me, or are the ladders different? My question still stands...which one is the NMRA using?

The NHRA ladder shown in your illustration is a "first versus worst" pro ladder, no matter how it's labeled. All NMRA classes are paired on a sportsman ladder, with the exception of Pro Outlaw 10.5, which uses a pro ladder.

Paul, thanks. If I understand you correctly, we use the ladder on the left. What I don't understand is why the rulebook indicates we use a NHRA Sportsman Ladder.

Jeff, I think the NHRA website has an error. That's definitely not a "sportsman ladder"... shoot them an email and let them know.

The NHRA site has their sportman ladder generator generating a PRO ladder. It's been wrong all season.

The best place to go for a blank sportsman ladder is raceamerica.com

In a field of even number cars (8, for example) a PRO ladder has #1 running #8, #2 running #7, etc.

In a sportsman ladder, the field is cut in half and then paired. #1 running #5, #2 running #6, etc.
