John Leslie Jr., who is embroiled in a tight battle for the ACT Factory Stock championship ran into difficulties in round two of qualifying. After his burnout a strange sound best described as “The sound a freely-spinning socket wrench makes” came out of the car. Leslie shut it off immediately and towed it back to the pits only to find a broken valve and resulting mangled piston. However, Leslie never says ‘die’, and he already has several lines on a replacement motor.

Conrad Scarry has been deadly consistent in Turbonetics Pro Outlaw 10.5 so far this weekend. All his qualifying runs have been within 0.02 seconds of each other. Going into eliminations tomorrow he sits in the number one spot, with a 6.85 3 215 mph, which is a new trap speed record as well.

AJ Powell held on to the number one qualifying spot in ProCharger Super Street Outlaw today, with a 7.51. Powell showed that he found some power with a 7.40 pass in Atco. If he stays on his low seven-fifty pace tomorrow, he’s got a good shot at taking all the marbles.

SSO racer Chris Tuten gave us a scare today when there was a puff of smoke out of the car, followed by Tuten rapidly pulling the car off the racing surface and throwing open the door. There was no fire, but he did kick a rod out of the oil pan. He’s got his old nitrous motor in the trailer but he’s uncertain as to the extent of the damage and whether he can mix and match enough pieces to stay in the game. We hope we’ll see him in round one tomorrow morning.

John Kolivas has been the man to beat all year in BFGoodrich Tires Drag Radial, but the second half of the season is turning out to be a trial by fire. In Joliet, he went out after the first round of eliminations with a hurt top end, and a limping pass in the third qualifying round today may signal more mechanical woes to overcome before tomorrow’s eliminations kick off.

You’ll never see odder Ford-powered bracket cars than you will here in Columbus. How about a Legends dirt-track spec-racer, normally motivated by an 1100cc motorcycle engine, running a Blue Oval V8 instead? Sure, the power-to-weight ratio is amazing, but as you can tell by the 12.35 dial, the problem is getting that power to the track with such a short wheelbase.

Hedman Hedders True Street, presented by Muscle Mustangs and Fast Fords magazine, also brings out an eclectic mix of cars and trucks. The Marauder might have been panned for its somewhat underwhelming performance when it came out, but this one clearly demonstrates the ability to overwhelm it’s tires all the way out past the hundred-foot mark.

Edelbrock Hot Street racer Dan Paolini put his silver Fox hard on the bumper in the second round of qualifying this morning, but didn’t do any significant damage to the car. Paolini was back out with a decent run in the third and final qualifying session, and landed in fifth position on the ladder. Last night’s two-plus inches of rain in an hour might have played a part in the extra grip evident today – Paolini is just one of several drivers earning induction into the Order of the Crimped Header Tubes here in Columbus.
