An exciting weekend at the All-Star Nationals (race wrap)
Date: Sunday, August 8

Here in Concord, NC at the Second Annual Nitto NMRA/NMCA All-Star Nationals there were some amazing performances and upsets at zMAX Dragway, which made for a seriously exciting race weekend.

Turbonetics Pro Outlaw 10.5 only had three entries, but put on quite the show. Mike Murillo took the number one spot with a 7.22, giving him the bye straight into the final round on Sunday. On the other side of the ladder, Dwayne James got a single when Conrad Scarry succumbed to engine problems and didn’t make the call. In the final, Murillo took the win light, 6.98 to 7.32.

ProCharger Super Street Outlaw action saw Sam Vincent shatter the record in qualifying, running a 7.262 – the quickest pass ever for the class – for the number one spot. In the semis, John Macdonald had the bye into the final while John Urist defeated Vincent on a holeshot in a wild side-by-side battle to meet Macdonald in the final. The final round ended before it started as Urist were .053 red, giving Macdonald the win.

DiabloSport EFI Renegade had a seven-car turnout, with Dan Rawls taking the top spot in qualifying with an 8.46. In the semis, Brian Mitchell went red, allowing Bart Tobener to advance to the final, while Chris Van Gilder defeated Dan Rawls on a shutdown pass. In the final Tobener got around Van Gilder’s holeshot to win, 8.56 to 8.89.

In Edelbrock Hot Street action, Don Bowles pushed his Maverick to an 8.63 for the top spot on Saturday. In eliminations, Bowles defeated Tim Eichorn to advance while Charlie Booze, Jr. got a pass when Rick Riccardi lit the red bulb by a mere .003 second. The final was a close race as the pair was neck and neck, with Bowles taking the win light by only .004 second.

BFGoodrich Tires Drag Radial was a dogfight all weekend, with Jason Lee coming out on top on Saturday with a 7.98 at 175 miles per hour. Lee advanced to the final round when Sean Lyon redlit in the semis to meet Chad Doyle who defeated Brian Tuten. Doyle spun hard on the hit, allowing Lee to streak to an 8.11-second class victory.

Steeda Real Street Presented by 5.0 Mustang Magazine Bruce Hemminger took the top spot with an impressive 9.433-second effort. In the semis defending-champion Tim Matherly had the bye run into the finals, while Hemminger had to defeat Jim Breese in the semis to meet Matherly. The final round was a non-event as Matherly broke a wheel and damaged the suspension on the previous bye run, allowing Hemminger to take the win unopposed.

The Eibach Spring Pure Street top qualifier was Shawn Johnson, driving Jim St.Charles record-setting car, posting a 10.12 for the pole. Brandon Alsept had the competition bye run into the final, while on the o . . .

Sunday Morning zMAX updates
Date: Sunday, August 8

While we mentioned ProCharger Super Street Outlaw and Sammy Vincent’s stellar 7.33-second pass yesterday, we’d be remiss for not reporting Vincent’s pass in the third round of qualifying yesterday, where he made the quickest pass ever recorded in the class, stopping the clocks with a 7.262 at just under 193 miles per hour. That’s flying!

Edelbrock Hot Street has a seven-car field here in zMAX, and sitting on the top is Don Bowles with an 8.634 at 158.74 miles per hour. Robbie Blankenship is only a tick behind at 8.658 and the rest of the field is less than two-tenths behind, with the spread between the number one and number seven qualifiers only .200 second.

In a surprising switch up, Shawn Johnson is here driving Jim St. Charles record-setting ride. Even with the warm air and humidity, Johnson was able to coax a 10.15 out of the combination, proving that not only is the track working, but that a good naturally aspirated combo will run well, even in not-the-greatest air.

In Trick flow Open Comp qualifying, there were a pair of perfect triple-zero reaction times, with Saul Walker II’s taking place before Jon M. Pickering’s for the top qualifier spot. There was also a perfect reaction time in Detroit Locker Truck and Lighting, as “M.J. Ranchero” Smith left the tree with a .000 on the board.
