2023 NMRA BBK Spring Break Shootout Title Goes To Kuffel

By NMRA Staff

Each year, for good reason, the BBK Spring Break Shootout is one of the most highly anticipated events in the Holley NMRA Drag Racing Series. The season-opening event in Orlando features the event namesake class, the BBK Spring Break Shootout, a specialty category that showcases the 16 quickest and fastest cars in Circle D Specialties True Street in a heads-up street car battle.

This event is a grueling test of man and machine that includes making it through True Street, including the challenging 30-mile street cruise, with a rules package that puts a premium on reliability. The winner must then out-perform and out-last the field in an all-out heads-up drag race. It’s a true survival of the fittest, and this year, the last man standing was Orlando’s own Adam Kuffel with his awesome four-eyed Foxbody.

Driving his nitrous-equipped, small-block 1985 Mustang GT, Kuffel defeated Jason Wagoner in the final round. Gaining a holeshot advantage on the starting line, Kuffel rolled to 8.87 to 8.79 victory and for his efforts, he was rewarded with $800 in cash, a $500 Aeromotive Gift Card, plus $1,000 Brother's Performance gift card and the coveted BBK Spring Break Shootout trophy.

“Pulled off another win today. The NMRA Spring Break Shootout Winner,” Kuffel wrote on his Facebook page. “I was out to run the 9.00 [second] trophy in the NMRA True Street event on Saturday. Somehow, I ended up runner-up in the True Street Event. I made the Spring Break Shootout on Sunday qualifying No. 2 (16 quickest average cars compete heads up). Thanks to the Permaul family for helping me out this weekend. We all had a great time running in The NMRA event.”

Facing a tough field of 72 cars, Kuffel posted the third-quickest average in the True Street class at 9.29, but he was well behind leader Mike Jovanis heading into Spring Break Shootout eliminations. Jovanis is a veteran competitor who took the top spot with a best pass of 7.87 and and an 8.00 average, but he fouled in the opening round of eliminations.

Kuffel was both quick and consistent as he made his way past Robert Thompson, Gilbert Correa, and Andrew Sheridan to reach the final. Kuffel was solidly in the 8s and did his job on the starting line by leaving first against each of his opponents.

Kuffel’s supporters include TRZ Motorsports, BLP Racing Products, Induction Solutions, Holeshot Performance Wheels, TBM Brakes, FTI_transmissions, and Greg Forcetech.

For BBK, a company with a long history of making fuel-injected performance vehicles faster and more powerful, the Spring Break Shootout provides the perfect arena for which to showcase its vast product line.

“With 35 years in the performance bolt-on parts industry, BBK is excited to sponsor and support the Spring Break Shootout with the desire to continue pushing the boundaries of performance upgrades on today’s modern muscle car and truck,” Brian Murphy, CEO of BBK Performance, said.

“BBK carries a wide selection of performance parts such as throttle bodies, cold-air intakes, headers, and more! Our products are designed to be bolt-on upgrades, many of which can be installed in your vehicle in under an hour and greatly improve the horsepower and torque output of your car or truck,” Murphy added. “Our helpful install guides make installation easy, and we offer technical assistance to our customers. Best of all, all our products are made right here in the USA and carry a full one-year warranty.”

“Back in 1995, current Promedia Sales Director Jim Campisano, and his staff at Muscle Mustangs & Fast Fords magazine, created the Spring Break Shootout and it remains a prestigious and popular category for elite street machines across North America,” added Steve Wolcott, President and CEO of NMRA. “BBK Performance continuing its sponsorship is a testament to the enduring popularity of the longest-running heads-up street car class in drag racing.”
