Albright Rebounds After Wreck & Will Race at NMRA Spring Break Shootout

Posted By: Mary Lendzion
While competing in QA1 True Street presented by Muscle Mustangs & Fast Fords at last year's NMRA season opener at Bradenton Motorsports Park in Florida in March, Larry Albright's 1991 Mustang went into a wild wheelstand, rolled over and slid down track on its roof. While he was not hurt, his black low eight-second car was, and he made the difficult decision to replace the car he had campaigned in the class for more than a decade with another black 1991 Mustang he purchased from a friend. It came with a Dan Neumann Race Cars-fabricated chrome moly cage certified to 8.50, but Albright hired Randy Casey to add more bars to bring it to 25.5 specs for a 7.50 certification. New UPR suspension components were installed, though the enhanced 8.8 rearend was moved from the former car to the new car, as were the Mustang Performance Racing-built 348 cubic-inch small-block Ford and 85mm Precision turbo, JW Powerglide and PTC converter, which were not compromised in the wreck. Albright, who ran all of the new wiring throughout the car, continues to rely on a Holley EFI Dominator, with tuning assistance from Errol McCollum of TPS, and the car, which, at 3300 pounds, weighs 100 pounds less than the former car, rolls on Mickey Thompson ET Street Radial Pro 275s. The build was debuted two weeks ago at Orlando Speed World. I thought I would be nervous about making another hit, but when I got into the car and strapped in, it was business as usual and I concentrated on doing my thing and making sure the car was where I wanted it to be, said Albright, of Jensen Beach, Florida. Plus, I have confidence in myself, in my rollcage and in my RaceQuip safety equipment. On Albright's only test pass that day, the car leaped off the line, recorded a 1.36 in the 60-foot and a 5.54 at 132 mph in the eighth-mile. I told my friend, Paul Lewis, who has helped me out from day one, that if the car ran in the 5.50s or better, I was going to load it up and head home, because that was the goal, said Albright. So, when it ran 5.54 on the first pass, I loaded up and headed home. I will say that I didn't expect it to do that on the very first pass. That remarkable accomplishment was followed a few days later with a 1.28 60-foot and an ever quicker and faster 5.34 at 134 mph in the eighth-mile. I had promised my wife, Meg, that I wouldn't pull any more wheelies, so I had to make sure I had a tame pass for the first pass when I went 5.54, and then I added boost sooner for the fourth pass when I went 5.34, said Albright. Albright, who's confident there's more in the combination, plans to uncork it in QA1 True Street presented by Muscle Mustangs & Fast Fords at the 23rd Annual Nitto NMRA Spring Break Shootout, March 2-5, at Bradenton Motorsports Park in Florida. I know there will be some seven-second cars in the class, but I'm hoping for three consistent mid-eight passes, said Albright. If I can do that, and qualify for the (JLT Performance) Shootout on Sunday, I'll be very satisfied. I'll be happy to get back out, compete and have a good time.
