While Joe Guertin had competed in NMRA ProCharger Coyote Modified for the past three years, he's making a move to NMCA Edelbrock Xtreme Street this year.
And, when he's not laying down laps in that highly competitive category, he'll head to NMRA Edelbrock Renegade, Ultra Street and Duck X Productions races.
I enjoyed racing in Coyote Modified, but making changes to my combination to race in Xtreme Street means I could also race in Renegade and Ultra Street, which means I'll get to race even more, said Guertin.
Currently, Guertin's 305 cubic-inch Coyote engine is being freshened by Tim Eichhorn of MPR Racing Engines, and while he had run as quick as 7.80 with a ProCharger F-1A-91 in front of the engine, he'll replace it with a ProCharger F-1A-94.
It's the same engine we ran in Coyote Modified, and we're not adding cubic inches, but Tim (Eichhorn) may have done some internal changes to take advantage of the additional boost from the new ProCharger, said Guertin. I know that there are a lot of turbos out there, but I love ProCharger, I'm loyal to ProCharger and I wanted to stick with ProCharger. Besides, when I turn my car on and it starts whistling the way only a ProCharger can whistle, my heart melts.
CRE Performance will handle the fabrication involved with moving from an air-to-air intercooler to an air-to-water intercooler.
I'm hoping that the air-to-water intercooler will allow the air intake temperatures to be considerably cooler, and I'm hoping for more horsepower as a result, said Guertin.
The Florida-based deputy sheriff will continue to run a Powerglide, and his transmission-builder, Automatic Transmission Factory (ATF), will help him choose gear ratios that will be optimal whether he's competing on the eighth-mile in NMCA Edelbrock Xtreme Street and Ultra Street or on the quarter-mile in NMRA Edelbrock Renegade.
Having not run the eighth-mile or an air-to water intercooler before, I'll need to educate myself, but I hope to show up and have some fun while taking baby steps toward becoming competitive, said Guertin, whose crew includes his wife, Charlena Guertin, and Chet Caminita.
The team has their sights set on beginning the dialing-in process at the 16th Annual NMCA Muscle Car Mayhem, March 8-11 at Bradenton Motorsports Park in Florida.
Tim (Eichhorn) is telling me that the car is going to go faster and that I'll need to hold on, said Guertin, with a laugh.
