The track here Atlanta Dragway is going hot at 10am this morning and the cool, sunny weather should prove favorable for fast elapsed times. We'll start the day with the first round of qualifying for NMCA/NMRA Open Comp and continue with the rest of the index classes before jumping into the heads-up categories around noon.
A special feature of this weekend's event is the 2nd Annual NMRA/NMCA Sealed Stock All-Star Showdown featuring Coyote Stock vs. Chevrolet Performance Stock. Taking place during qualifying, it will put the spotlight on the top three drivers in 2016 points and the first event in 2017 combined, plus a wildcard driver whose name will be drawn during a meeting of drivers before qualifying. Qualified NMRA Coyote Stock drivers are Drew Lyons, Shane Stymiest and Jacob Lamb, and qualified NMCA Chevrolet Performance Stock drivers are Glenn Pushis, Kevin Lumsden, Ronnie Hackelton. Alternates, if needed, are Carlos Sobrino, Darin Hendricks, Tim Matherly, Joe Marini and Frank Paultanis on the NMRA side, and Keith Vaughn, Haley Rounsavall, Jesse Wilson, Heath Shemwell and Pete Epple on the NMCA side. Up for grabs are $1,000 cash, a trophy and a trip to the Aerospace Components Winner's Circle.
Driven by Fiscus/Klugger Racing's Kevin Flash Fiscus, Chris Matters's eye-catching 06 Saleen S281 recently set the record for an X275 Modular-powered car, and the guys are looking to run in VP Racing Fuels Street Outlaw this weekend but will do so in full X275 trim. The Rich Groh Racing-built 5.4L GT engine is boosted by an 88mm Precision turbo and bolts to an ATF 3-speed TH 400 transmission, and JPC Racing's Ronnie Reynolds is heading up crew chief duties for the combination. Matters recently swapped his Fast Mover Motorsports Saleen over to use Menscer Motorsports 4-way shocks and struts, and had Loco Graphics rewrap it so it's fresh for the 2017 season.
Massachusetts-based Aaron Bates is ready to rock with his DMC Racing-built 25.3 Edelbrock Renegade 87 Mustang. Tuned by Mike Dezotell of Dez Racing, the ProCharged 360 ci engine topped with Trick Flow heads and Powerglide transmission have been freshened up during the off season, but otherwise Bates hasn't made any other major changes.
Peoples Bank-backed Tommy Annunziata and Jim LaRocca of LaRocca Performance have a new rear-facing Whipple blower on their ProCharger Coyote Modified 14 Cobra Jet Mustang's Coyote engine. Although they're still working the bugs out, the new boost maker was installed prior to the NMRA season opener in Florida, and the guys set the class speed record there; the 25.5 cage from CJM Chassis and Tommy Martino Race Engines-refreshed engine should only further bolster their numbers.
Becki Lynn is channeling her inner Ricky Bobby and doesn't know what to do with her hands. With a new maybe-Modular Muscle, maybe-Limited Street 2010 Mustang in the works thanks to Dyno Joe Cram, she's still waiting on the Holbrook-built coyote engine to be finished up and a blower to be selected. In the meantime, she's piloting Lloyd Mikeska's original 2006 Saleen this weekend in Exedy Racing Clutch Modular Muscle. A Circle D converter, Mickey Thompson tires, MagnaFlow cat-back exhaust, QA1 rear shocks and 4.10 gears are all a part of the 100,000+ mile car's combination.
Centerpoint, Indiana-based racer Darin Hendricks is still hunting for his first 9-second G-Force Racing Transmissions Coyote Stock pass. With a new, stiffer, and safer 25.5 cage from Pro Tree Race Cars for 2017, he has no doubts the 93 SVT Cobra will get there, but it'll take the perfect combination of conditions to make it happen. Not one to make predictions, Hendricks is planning to let his car do the talking instead.
Just halfway through the NMRA/NMCA All-Star Nationals and Sondra Leslie is off to a good lead in our pick for the wheelie of the weekend. She dragged the bumper in round one of qualifying, came back and put on another air show in round two, despite the excessive front nose height, Leslie still dropped a 10.79 at 121 mph
