The CJ Pony Parts 18th annual NMRA Ford Motorsport Nationals presented by Vortech is officially underway. Race officials have made the decision to accelerate the program by adding a second qualifying run today giving racers three shots at the track today, finish the third qualifying run tomorrow, and then head into eliminations on Saturday evening. The goal is to get ahead the weather that is threatening Sunday's program. With clear weather today and tomorrow, we anticipate an efficient program that should get us close to finishing all elimination rounds, including QA1 True Street and the Bracket Racing program.
The 2019 Mustang Bullitt is on display at Maple Grove Raceway in the Ford Performance booth. It is one of the few public appearances for the new vehicle, which was built to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Mustang and the iconic chase scene that appeared in the movie of the same name.
After a slow start to 2018 for VP Racing Fuels Street Outlaw defending champion Manny Buginga, he is making headway with tuner Josh Ledford on his turbocharged Mustang. The team spent Thursday making runs in the 4.40s, testing different tuning strategies. Today, during test and tune, Buginga posted a solid 4.38 at 170 mph run and was quickest for the session. Point's leader Andy Manson, who has been to every final round in 2018 to this point, ran 4.39 with his ProCharger-powered machine immediately following Team Buginga.
Off-the-trailer Sondra Leslie rolled out her brand-new Steeda Limited Street 1986 Mustang LX and unleashed a 9.37 at just 140 mph, letting the boys know that she is there to make some noise and stir up trouble. Leslie's Mustang sports a MPR Race Engines Coyote 5.0 with a Vortech Ti supercharger. Ken Bjonnes of Palm Beach Dyno tuned up the supercharged combination but was not willing to reveal the final chassis dyno results.
Another new Steeda Limited Street racer is Kevin McCotter, who has been a regular in QA1 True Street. He has a new engine combination and he wasn't around when stopped by his trailer, so all we know it is a big-inch Windsor engine and is naturally aspirated.
QA1 True Street racer Mike Jovanis laid down the quickest run in the field after a few test and tune runs as the turbocharged Mustang posted a 7.90 at 179 mph. The car is powered by a DiSomma Racing Engines 347 with a Forced Inductions 94mm turbo and a giant front mounted air-to-air intercooler. Jovanis said he was working on several new features with the Haltech Elite 2500 to help manage the car's street-antics.
Lund Racing has several customer cars on the property, including this one. It is entered in QA1 True Street where the twin turbocharged setup helped it run 9.16 at 157 mph. Jon Lund II informed us it is powered by a HPP twin turbo kit with Precision 64mm turbochargers. It ran 8.60s yesterday and the team is testing a 4R200 from Power by the Hour.
The Modfather Returns! Ronnie Diaz is back on track with his turbocharged 5.4 Four-valve engine with a fresh intake manifold from Hogans and a new tune from DGR Performance. The chassis dyno numbers showed promising results as Diaz is tuning his way to mid-4s.
