By Mary Lendzion Photos courtesy of Kevin Schweizer While Kevin Schweizer was racing his dragster and GTO in bracket categories at tracks near his home in Rockport, Indiana, he stepped away from competition for several years. But a few years ago, he decided that he wanted to start building another car, this time with his teenage daughter, Lynnsie, and split seat time with her. “We got the blessing from my wife, Jaime,” said Schweizer, who purchased a 1980 Mercury Zephyr and had it set up with an 8.50 cage, mini-tubs, UPR front suspension and Baer brakes by an undisclosed shop. For power, he chose a 7.3L Godzilla engine, which he purchased from Summit Racing Equipment, and two 72mm turbos. A Powerglide will make good use of that power while the car rolls on a 9-inch rear end with Strange components spec’d by Brian Friedentag, Afco shocks and struts and 275 drag radials wrapped round RC Components wheels. Fridentag will use a Holley EFI system to tune to track conditions. 
“The turbos are based off Borg Warner S400 turbos, and they were sourced and spec’d by John Bewley of Full Proof Performance and built by Forced Inductions,” said Schweizer. “True Street racer Mike Jovanis helped me decided what I wanted for front suspension, tires, wheels and brakes, which I appreciate.” Schweizer plans to dive into the NMRA’s just-announced SunCoast Performance 8.60 Street Race category, while his daughter will take on NHRA Junior Street. NMRA collaborated with racers Leticia Hughes, Schweizer and others to create SunCoast Performance 8.60 Street Race, a heads-up category that will be contested at the Spring Break Shootout, March 3-6 at Bradenton Motorsports Park in Florida, NMRA/NMCA All-Star Nationals, April 21-24 at Rockingham Dragway in North Carolina, NMRA Ford Performance Nationals, June 9-12 at Summit Motorsports Park in Ohio and the NMRA World Finals + Holley Intergalactic Ford Festival, Sept. 29-Oct. 3 at Beech Bend Raceway in Kentucky. 
“My tuner, Brian Friedentag, will slow the car down to low 9s when my daughter is racing eighth-mile, and speed it up when I’m racing quarter-mile,” said Schweizer. Over winter, Schweizer will have his engine and transmission mounted, and have his turbos installed and plumbed by Bivins Race Cars in Kentucky. He’ll handle the wiring of his car and the installation of his radiator and Aeromotive fuel system. “I’m really looking forward to racing in the new SunCoast Performance 8.60 Street Race category,” said Schweizer. “I think the street car crowd and people who like to watch fast street cars will be interested in it, and it should have a nice following.”
