Long-Time Drag Racer Don Bowles Sr. Passes Away

The NMRA and NMCA family lost a great friend and champion racer, as Don Bowles Sr. has died at the age of 83. Bowles was the NMRA 2009 Hot Street world champion driving his familiar “Coal Digger” Ford Maverick.

Long before entering the NMRA and NMCA ranks, Bowles Sr. competed in NHRA and IHRA sanctioned drag racing in a variety of classes. Originally from Kentucky, Bowles was a leader in the coal mine industry. He began racing in the 1960s and Bowles went on to rack up an impressive number of NHRA wins and Wally trophies, as well as victories in other series such as IHRA, throughout the ‘70s and ‘80s.

The Bowles name is strong in NMRA/NMCA drag racing, as his son Donnie Jr. and grandson, Cameron compete regularly on the tour.

The entire ProMedia staff would like to send our deepest condolences to the Bowles family.
