When it was announced last year that Steeda Limited Street would be added to the array of categories contested at NMRA events in 2018, enthusiasm for the entry-level, power-adder, heads-up class ensued.
Drivers who had been competing in the series, as well as drivers who had been competing outside of the series, read the rules and readied their race cars for the 24th Annual Nitto NMRA Spring Break Shootout in March at Bradenton Motorsports Park, where Kelly Shotwell secured the category's first records of the season with an 8.614 and 159.09 mph in his Mustang motivated by a turbocharged small-block Ford.
Among those drivers was Rick Erdman, who had been competing in NMRA Roush Super Stang in his 2015 Mustang featuring a supercharged Coyote engine, 6R80 transmission with a US Shift standalone controller, BMR suspension and 10-point cage by ChassisPro.
He went on to take part in the NMRA events in Florida, Georgia, Pennsylvania and Ohio and run a best of 9.67, but Erdman, who's currently in the fourteenth spot in points, decided to make a late-season move from his previous supercharger to a ProCharger D-1SC.
We talked with ProCharger and they were interested because they wanted a car in the Limited Street category, said Erdman, who recently wrapped up the swap at his shop, Amazon Tuning Solutions in South Carolina, and, while he was at it, replaced his previous intake with a Boss intake ported by 1320 Junkie Performance. We got the car running and we put it on a chassis dyno, and now we just want to do some testing on-track at Atlanta Dragway.
After that, Erdman, who relies on an SCT system to tune his combination, will head to the final NMRA event of the year, the 20th Annual Nitto NMRA All-Ford World Finals, Sept. 27-30 at Beech Bend Raceway in Kentucky, where he hopes to dip into the 8s in the car wearing a carbon fiber hood and trunk by Anderson Composites.
My goal this year is to run 8s with a stock engine, and I feel confident that I can do that, said Erdman, whose crew consists of his wife, Linn Erdman, Danny Taylor and Bob Green. Then, I want to build a new engine over winter and be ready for next year. Limited Street is going to be even more fun.
