Saturday Coverage 10th Annual NMRA/NMCA All Star Nationals presented by MAHLE Motorsport

The forecast is looking a little iffy for today, but rest assured all the NMRA/NMCA racing officials will be working quickly to dry and prep the track for final Qualifying and Eliminations all afternoon and evening... including Saturday Night Under the Lights! Unofficial spokesman for NMRA Steeda Limited Street, Michael Washington, has high hopes of getting into the 8s with FSC Magazine's Pure Evil Fox body. The latest and greatest ProMedia project holds the record for being the quickest and the fastest naturally aspirated Coyote engine-powered car in the US, having already gone 9.03 at 153 mph. Thanks go out to Menscer Motorsports, Mickey Thompson Performance Tires & Wheels, Race Part Solutions, Rich Groh Racing, and JLT Performance for their support, as well as Manny Buginga for his help turning wrenches. After having tried his hand in NMRA ProCharger Coyote Modified with a nitrous kit on his blue notchback Mustang, Phil McAllister from Alabama realized he just didn't have enough for the class and opted to switch to NMRA Steeda Limited Street instead. Yesterday, he qualified eighth when he ran the quarter-mile in 10.87-seconds at 126 mph. Although McAllister's Gen 1 Coyote engine is currently naturally aspirated, it won't stay that way for a long a ProCharger is on order and will be installed before the next race. McAllister will continue to run his standard equipment, which includes a C4 transmission, Griffin radiator, and UPR Products suspension components. The new guy in NMRA G-Force Racing Transmissions Coyote Stock is Steve Kurimchak, but you can just call him Steve K. A part of the Booze Brothers Racing crew, Kurimchak brought his 01 Mustang Bullitt (a legitimate Bullitt model, with a number plate and everything as shown by Kurimchak in the photo above) out to Atlanta Dragway from his home in Maryland to have a go at the class. UPR Products suspension components, along with AFCO shocks and Strange struts are also a part of the build, which was handled by Kurimchak with Charlie Booze, Jr. tweaking things along the way. Kurimchak's wife, Melanie, and son, Everett, 16 months, have been supportive of his endeavor, and Mike Strausser at MSFab has also been an invaluable resource. With a Gen 1 Coyote under its hood and a G101-A transmission with McLeod clutch, his car has already produced a 10.35 at 129 mph pass at another event. Tom Hoffman's '68 Mustang suffered a 2nd gear sprag failure in his Turbo 350 transmission on Friday, and a team of fellow racers and crew jumped into action and pulled the ailing gearbox out in about 30 minutes. Edelbrock Renegade racer Bart Tobener hooked Hoffman up with his transmission guy who was able to rebuild the unit in short order. NMRA ProCharger Coyote Modified star and 2017 season champion Tommy Annunziata has a problem with his Whipple supercharged 14 Cobra Jet: too much power! Annunziata and crew chief Jim LaRocca of LaRocca's Performance were having a hard time getting down the track, but Mark Menscer of Menscer Motorsports stepped in yesterday and got the CJ calmed down so that it was leaving hard once again. Today they'll put the new advantage to work as qualifying wraps up. Bowling Green, Kentucky's Alan Felts has been running his 91 Mustang hard in NMRA VP Racing Fuels Street Outlaw this weekend, and his 4.450 at 163.83 mph hit qualified him seventh in the group. Felts also was tapped to participate in the special Street Outlaw All-Star Shootout race, where he defeated the 2017 NMCA class champ Charlie Cooper in round one. Felts will move on to face NMCA wildcard Daniel Pharris in round two, but first he and crew chief Jessie Coulter have to get a transmission leak sorted out. Thank you to all the manufacturers and vendors who support the NMRA and NMCA, and its family of racers! Despite the gloomy weather, the midway is alive and well this weekend. Exedy Racing Clutches Modular Muscle driver Adam Cox spent a quick minute wiping down his Mustang this morning while the NMRA/NMCA crew was busy drying the track off. The naturally aspirated, four-valve engine under the hood was recently documented on the pages of Fastest Street Car magazine. John Leslie Jr. and his Fox-body Mustang are always great to watch on track, as the pony car always puts on a good wheelie show. Leslie Jr. and his team were making some big changes to the clutch setup in his Richmond Gear Factory Stock ride to find some more performance. 2017 ProCharger Coyote Modified champion Tommy Annunziata and crew chief/tuner Jimmy LaRocca were making changes to the blower belt pulley and tensioners on their Cobra Jet Mustang as the Coyote powerplant keeps slinging and breaking blower belts when on the two-step. This pretty lady right here is having a blast in NMRA Richmond Gear Factory Stock and cut an impressive 0.006-second light during Thursday's testing. Thanks to support and advice from her boyfriend and fellow racer, Adam Arndt, Krista Elyse is learning the ropes of heads-up racing and kicking butt while doing it. She's been busy gathering data and suspects her 10 Mustang's tune up is leaning out up top since her 1.38-second 60-foot time only produced a 10.692-second quarter-mile run, and her personal best 10.50 pass had a 1.37-second 60-foot. She's focusing on being careful on the tree and giving it a go so she can make Arndt proud since he lovingly sacrificed his own racing season to be there to cheer her on instead. Jay Misener made the trek from his home in Bradford, Ontario, Canada, just for this weekend's event which is his second ever with NMRA. Running in NMRA Steeda Limited Street, Misener's LX hatchback features an all-motor Gen 1 Coyote engine with a T4 transmission and McLeod clutch. One of the last few stick-shift cars remaining, Misener just wanted to try something a little different and knew his 88 model was a good fit for the class. Upgraded suspension from UPR Products, along with AFCO coilovers, and Strange brakes, axles, and spool rounds out the build, which was done by Misener at his shop, Misener Motorsports. To date, he's run a personal best of 9.72 at 137 mph with a 1.30-second 60 foot and is qualified number eight at the moment but is battling suspension settings to try and go quicker. After popping his engine at the season opener in Florida, NMRA G-Force Racing Transmissions Coyote Stock racer Andy Johnson's 91 Mustang is back up and running, but it's fighting its driver to hook up and is pulling the revs down as it struggles to run free. Johnson's working to make adjustments to his clutch in order to keep the Fox body happy before hitting his third and final qualifying session. The car show is heating up with a variety of good ol American muscle spanning several decades on display.
