When Scott Wayne ran his rowdy red Mustang Cobra in NMRA Edelbrock Renegade for the first time last year, he proved that he was cut out for the very competitive category.
He ran as quick and fast as 4.89 and 143 mph in his car with chassis work and a cage by 1320 Fabrications and a 4.6L Four-Valve by Justin's Performance Center paired with a Precision 76mm turbo, but he was determined to dish out even more.
My combination was older, and I wanted to go with a newer engine platform, so last year, Ronnie Reynolds of Boosted Fabrication and Performance, and I, talked with Rich Groh of RGR Engines, about a new engine, said Scott. We talked about being faster and more competitive while retaining durability, and with Rich's experience, we have put together what we're sure will be a good combination.
The new engine, which Groh is in the process of building, is a Coyote on a Voodoo 5.2 block with a Boss 302 crank, Manley billet rods and custom Diamond pistons. It will be topped with Voodoo heads and a sheet metal intake fabricated with an air-to-water intercooler by Greg Jones, and fronted by a new Precision 76mm turbo massaged by Forced Inductions.
Ryan Hecox of Injector Maintenance and Services is on board to help make sure the fuel system, which includes Fuel Injector Clinic injectors, is optimal, and backing the power will be a Proformance Racing Transmissions-built Powerglide and a new ProTorque U9 converter.
As soon as Scott has his new engine, he'll take it and his car to Boosted Fabrication and Performance, which Reynolds co-owns with fellow racer Robert Williams.
I had to change the engine wiring harness since I'll have a new engine platform, and when we have the new engine, Ronnie will help me fabricate the piping for the new engine combination and the new single turbo kit, said Scott, a firefighter in Baltimore County, Maryland.
When that work is wrapped up, Scott will install new Viking double-adjustable struts in the front of the car, which features stock-style suspension, has Santhuffs coilovers in the rear and rolls on Mickey Thompson drag radials wrapped around Belak Industries wheels.
Scott and Ronnie Reynolds will optimize the combination with Holley EFI, and Chris Davis and Tommy Keeney will continue to help however and wherever they can, including at the races.
Scott hopes to be pulling into the lanes at the 26th Annual Nitto NMRA Spring Break Shootout, Feb. 27-March 1 at Bradenton Motorsports Park in Florida, but if not, he'll do so at the 12th Annual Scoggin-Dickey Parts Center NMRA/NMCA All-Star Nationals, April 2-5 at Atlanta Dragway. And when he's not in NMRA Edelbrock Renegade action, he'll head to various X275 events and the Outlaw Street Car Shootout Series at Cecil County Dragway in Maryland.
