Thursday Coverage 11th Annual Scoggin-Dickey Parts Center NMRA/NMCA All-Star Nationals

It's a gorgeous, cool day as the race rigs are rolling into Atlanta Dragway in Commerce, Georgia, for the 11th Annual Scoggin-Dickey Parts Center NMRA/NMCA All-Star Nationals Presented by MAHLE Motorsport. Today's action gets underway at noon with a test n tune session that will give us an idea of who is running well heading into qualifying. Stay tuned here for coverage throughout the day and watch the live feed over on SpeedVideo.com as the cars start ripping down the track.

Here's a breakdown of how the initial test session which kicks off with NMRA ARP Open Comp and ends with NMRA G-Force Racing Transmissions Coyote Stock will go down today.

The NMRA/NMCA team is checking all the little details, including the rollout, and prepping the surface. Total Venue Concepts is the official track prep equipment of NMRA and NMCA with sprayers, draggers, and tire rotators on-site for each event.

Racers were lined up and raring to go this morning as the gates opened at Atlanta Dragway.

Modular Motorsports Racing's Mark Luton was chasing gremlins at the season opener, but his team fixed the issue by breaking the cardinal rule of swapping two parts at once the engine control unit and the crank trigger wheel. All is well in the VP Racing Fuels Xtreme Pro Mod machine, and he expects both cars to run well this season. The interesting thing about these 3,000-plus-horsepower MMR GenX Coyote engines is they require little between-round maintenance, and Luton says they can often go a whole season without tearing them down.

Back in action after missing the season openers, Edelbrock Renegade racer Bart Tobener (left with son, Matt, right) is racing this weekend. Busy opening his own shop, Tobener Motorsports, he hasn't done much to the car since last season, save for swapping in a new trans and replacing the brake rotors. He dusted it off for some hits at Lights Out 10, but is hoping the home cooking will pay dividends at Atlanta Dragway.

The baddest TVS-boosted machines will square off this weekend in the EATON TVS Supercharger Throwdown. The class features an all-run field and the winner scores $1,000, a TVS supercharger of choice from one of EATON's technical partners (Edelbrock, Harrop, Magnuson Superchargers, or ROUSH Performance), and a custom TVS-rotored award built by EATON. One of the heavy hitters this weekend should be Oscar Morin (left), who is wheeling Ariel Salinas 2016 Mustang GT. Powered by an MPR sleeved-and-built Coyote topped by a VMP Gen 3 blower pumping out 28 pounds of boost, the menacing S550 puts the power down with an AA Performance front suspension and a BMR rear suspension. Morin is hoping to run a personal best in the mid-eights this weekend in the class and eventually transition over to the NMRA Advanced Fuel Dynamics Limited Street category.

Hellion Power Systems main man John Urist's dual-fuel S550 is making plenty of power now that direct-injection guru/tuner Uwe Ostmann of Xtreme-DI dialed in the combo. Currently the team is working to tweak the torque converter to corral all power it is generating. If you aren't up to speed, Urist's VP Racing Fuels Street Outlaw entry is under the sway of a Bosch engine control unit that commands both direct and high-pressure port injectors.

We got a chuckle out of Jacob Lamb when we said this was the most maintenance we had ever seen on a G-Force Racing Transmissions Coyote Stock car. Lamb and his crew were installing a fresh set of E3 spark plugs, which he said were good for about six ponies on the dyno. He admitted he is still trying to find more power to keep up with the players in the class in hopes of visiting the Aerospace Components Winner's Circle.
