Adding to the anticipation for the 18th Annual Nitto NMRA All Ford World Finals at Beech Bend Raceway in Kentucky last fall was the revelation that multi-time NMRA world champion and VP Racing Fuels Street Outlaw standout John Urist would be taking part in his just-built Turn 14 Distribution 2016 Mustang.
The 25.3, four-link car built by Chris Hemmeter of Behind Bars Race Cars and Bruce Dyckes featured for the weekend a Coyote engine from Hellion Racing teammate Haley James Mustang paired with a 94mm Precision turbo and a custom Hellion Racing Single Turbo Outlaw Kit. Then, days later, Urist and his crew swapped that engine with Hellion Racing teammate Frank Varela's Coyote engine paired with a 94mm Precision turbo and a custom Hellion Single Turbo Outlaw Kit, and headed to No Mercy 7 at South Georgia Motorsports Park.
There, Urist laid down a stout 4.55 at 158 mph before removing himself from competition to begin the long haul to Las Vegas to display his car at SEMA for Turn 14 Distribution.
Even though we didn't get to finish the race, we were very excited about how the car ran, said Urist. We could have had a lot more bugs considering it was a brand new build.
Now, he's preparing to turn the wick up even more, as he recently received a custom billet block built by MMR, which Hellion Racing will use as the base for a 358 cubic-inch Coyote engine featuring Arias pistons and custom-ground Comp camshafts. It will be topped with factory GT350 heads with Ferrea valves and massaged by EIC Motorsports and a custom intake by EIC Motorsports, and fronted by a 94mm Precision turbo. A Neal Racing Transmissions-built Powerglide will help put the power to the pavement.
MMR is pioneering the first billet block for the Modular platform, said Urist. It's not lighter, but it's stronger, and will allow us to put out all of the power that the engine is capable of making.
