A few months after driving his 1971 Caprice to the NMCA Detroit Truetrac Nostalgia Muscle Car championship last year, Andy Warren climbed into his 2013 Mustang and headed to the 18th Annual Nitto NMRA All Ford World Finals at Beech Bend Raceway in Kentucky.
There, he entered Race Pages Ford Muscle, chose a 14-second index and won a few rounds before turning on the red light, ever so slightly, against Danny Towe, who went on to earn the season championship.
It was more than enough to make him decide that in addition to racing his 1971 Caprice in NMCA Detroit Truetrac Nostalgia Muscle Car at all six events on this year's NMCA tour, he would run his 2013 Mustang in NMRA Race Pages Ford Muscle at select events on this year's NMRA tour.
The focus on the Caprice will be there just as much as before, but having a new challenge to keep me busy while John's car is going through transformation will keep the blood flowing throughout the season, said Warren, a crew member for his brother, John Warren, who's currently changing the combination in his 1972 Nova for a move from NMCA Edelbrock Xtreme Street to NMCA Mickey Thompson Radial Wars.
Warren's 2013 Mustang is powered by a 3.7L V6 engine featuring E3 spark plugs, an Airaid cold air Intake, JMS chip, PedalMax throttle enhancer and a custom tune by Tuners, Inc.
A stock automatic transmission helps put the power to the pavement, and exhaust exits via a Flowmaster Scavenger X-pipe, dBX Series mufflers and high-flow cats set up by Jerry Reed at Payless Muffler and Brakes in Elizabethtown, Kentucky.
The car, which sports Hurst Stage 1 lowering springs and a Hurst Roll Control, cruises on JMS Savage wheels and Mickey Thompson ET Street S/S tires.
With the new parts, the Mustang got 29.2 mpg on the highway, said Warren. If I can still manage that, run mid 13s, and win some races, that will prove to the person looking to get into a traveling series that you don't need a super-fast car or truck and trailer to be successful and have fun doing it. Another goal is to keep it cost-effective and race an economical car that is easy on parts and runs fast enough to be fun.
Warren, who recently ran 13.73, is looking to settle into the 13.50 or 14.00 index while keeping modifications to a minimum on his street-driven Mustang.
