Conway Drives to Fourth Consecutive Detroit Locker Truck and Lightning Championship

Posted By: Mary Lendzion
By Mary Lendzion Through the years, Randy Conway has been purposeful and persistent in his pursuit of wins. His approach has served him well, as he motored to three NMRA ARP Open Comp championships in his Mustang before trucking to three NMRA Detroit Locker Truck and Lightning championships in Bruce Lampton's Ranger in 2016 through 2018, and he was determined to back those up in 2019. With the number 1 on the windows of Lampton's Coyote engine-powered Ranger, Conway qualified in the seventh spot with an .043 reaction time and went to the Aerospace Components Winner's Circle with a 10.32 on a 10.31 dial when Mike Roup had an issue and couldn't complete his pass at the 25th Annual Nitto NMRA Spring Break Shootout in March at Bradenton Motorsports Park in Florida. The Michigan-based driver went on to qualify in the fourth spot with an .021 reaction time and broke out in the semifinal round of eliminations with a 10.19 on a 10.28 dial against Fred Wade at the 11th Annual Scoggin-Dickey Parts Center NMRA/NMCA All-Star Nationals presented by Mahle Motorsport in April at Atlanta Dragway. Conway then qualified in the fourth spot with an .019 reaction time and exited eliminations in the first round with a breakout time of 10.23 on a 10.24 dial against Bob Dill at the Inaugural NMRA Ford Gateway Rumble presented by HPJ Performance in May at Gateway Motorsports Park in Illinois, and then qualified in the eighth spot with an .026 reaction time and wrapped up another win with a 10.40 on a 10.29 dial against Jon Plummer at the 19th Annual NMRA Ford Motorsport Nationals in June at Maple Grove Raceway in Pennsylvania. As the points battle began to heat up, he qualified in the ninth spot with an .033 reaction time and exited eliminations in the second round with a 10.30 on a 10.29 dial against Mike Motycka at the 14th Annual Nitto NMRA/NMCA Super Bowl of Street Legal Drag Racing in July at Route 66 Raceway in Illinois. Sitting in a position to seal the deal, Conway cruised into the final event on this year's NMRA schedule, the 21st Annual Nitto NMRA All-Ford World Finals in September at Beech Bend Raceway in Kentucky, where he qualified in the ninth spot with an .023 reaction time and made it to third round of eliminations before exiting with a 10.41 on a 10.32 dial against Jon M. Pickering. With that, he secured the NMRA Detroit Locker Truck and Lightning championship for the fourth year in a row. It feels great to win four straight championships, said Conway, whose wife, Kelly Conway, sister, Ashley Conway Lang, and father, Dennis Conway, all race, and whose children, Shelby, and Chase, are quite comfortable celebrating with their race-winning father in the Aerospace Components Winner's Circle. I struggled some with my driving this year, but we caught a couple lucky breaks, and it all worked out. The ever-composed Conway will be celebrated among fellow racers, family and friends at the NMRA Muscle Car Nationals presented by E3 Spark Plugs Awards Ceremony presented by Aerospace Components, Dec. 13 at the Indiana Convention Center.
