Bob Cook has accomplished a lot since he began competing in NMRA Edelbrock Renegade nearly nineteen years ago.
He earned a championship while campaigning the Sutton High Performance 2004 Mustang in 2008, and he has wheeled to many wins in his own 1990 Mustang, which most recently was motivated by an 8.2 deck 314 cubic-inch small-block Ford which he built before topping with Ford Racing Performance Parts Z304 heads and enhancing with a ProCharger F-1A-94 supercharger.
Cook, a highly-regarded racer with a rich history in the NMRA, has been as quick and fast as 7.50 and 184 mph in his blue beast with a Pro-Formance Transmissions-built Turbo 400 underneath it, and he’s making some changes to go even quicker and faster.
“My 314 cubic-inch engine hasn’t been as competitive as I would have liked it to be in Renegade for the past few years, and I decided it was time for me to build a new engine for the class,” said Cook.
So, he’s building a 9.5 deck 427 cubic-inch small-block Ford, with machine work by Rich Groh Racing, as he looks to step up in Renegade. It will wear a new set of Edelbrock Victor heads, and it will be fronted by the ProCharger F-1A-94 supercharger from his previous combination.
“It’s going to take some time to build the new engine,” said Cook. “I don’t want to just slap it together.”
But Cook, not wanting to be out of the cockpit, came up with a plan that will allow him to race while he’s building his new engine.
“I read the rules for the NMRA’s new ProCharger Modified Street class, and I can run that,” said Cook. “I’ll use the 314 cubic-inch engine I was using, and I’ll pair it with a new ProCharger D-1X supercharger. ProCharger said they would really like to see that supercharger in the class, and I don’t think anybody has really used my engine combination with that supercharger.”
Cook will join other ProCharger Modified Street drivers at the 25th Annual Nitto NMRA Spring Break Shootout, Feb. 28-March 3 at Bradenton Motorsports Park in Florida, and the 11th Annual NMRA/NMCA All-Star Nationals, April 4-7 at Atlanta Dragway, and quite possibly at events beyond that.
“I think we can get into the high-7s with the 314 cubic-inch engine and the ProCharger D-1X, and if I can be competitive in Modified Street, I just may continue running in the class for the rest of the year,” said Cook, who receives help at the races from his son, Kris Cook, Joe Saad, Mike Catapano and tuner Dale George. “I’m anxious to see what I can do.”
