Gabby Lujan Overpowers Huge Field to Take Tremec All Female True Street Title
Diversity has never been a problem for drag racing, as people from all walks of life are able to experience the thrill of straight-line racing. And that was evident at Summit Motorsports Park where 34 women drivers took part in the Tremec All Female True Street class. The car count represented significant growth in the event over previous years, and the quality, and the performance of female True Street entries has also made significant forward progress.
The All Female True Street class follows similar rules to the TorqStorm Superchargers and Circle D Specialties True Street classes that are a very popular part of every NMCA and NMRA event. Competitors must drive actual street cars and commit to a 30-mile street cruise before embarking on a series of three-straight passes with minimal adjustments allowed between each run.
The battle for the top spot was particularly intense as Gabby Lujan, one of the pre-race favorites, managed just a 10.24 on her first pass, but the Miami-based racer rallied with the quickest run of the event, an 8.56, and a 9.03 to finish with a stout 9.28 average and win the overall title including cash, and a variety of prizes from Tremec Transmissions and Mickey Thompson. Lujan held off Danielle Post of Woodstock, Ill., who posted a 10.28-second average in her 2011 Mustang to earn runner-up honors.
Kelly Bartlett of Berea, Ohio whipped her ’83 Capri to a 10.48-second average to claim the 10.00 title while Uniontown, Ohio’s Kimberly Wood earned the 11.00 title in her 2014 Mustang with an impressive 11.003 average holding off Jamie Flora and Autumn Schwalbe.
The 12.00 class was hotly contested with more than a half dozen racers aiming for that bullseye. Andrea Woolard of Parkersburg, W.V. emerged as the champion thanks to a 12.058 average in her 1991 Mustang. Woolard held off Maci McKenna and Stacy Jelinek, who were both in the running with averages of 12.11 and 12.18 respectively.
Danielle McGraw, who hails from Bolt, W.V., will return home with a trophy after claiming the 13.00 title with a 13.151-second average in her 1992 Mustang while Lauren Stoney was just three-thousandths of a second behind with a 13.154. In the 14.00 class, Heather Flanagan of Blacklick, Ohio posted an average of 14.012 in her 2011 Mustang to secure the title over Whitney Kirkbride while Elaine Moistner of Dublin, Ind., earned another win in the 15.00 class when she drove the family’s 2014 Mustang convertible to a 15.004 average.
The popular Tremec All Female True Street class will return at the Holley Intergalactic Ford Festival at rustic Beech Bend Raceway Park in Bowling Green, Ky. Sept. 28 – October 1.
