Hobson Hauling Toward Edelbrock Renegade

Posted By: Mary Lendzion
While he got his feet wet within the NMRA last year by lapping his 2014 Mustang GT in the Turbo Coyote Shootout, Tony Hobson has decided to make the move to Edelbrock Renegade, where the current class record is the 7.58 run last year. His powerplant, which propelled him to a best of 8.34 at 168 mph, consists of a Rich Groh Racing 302 cubic-inch 5.0 engine built on a stock block with Rich Groh Racing sleeves. It's topped with Rich Groh Racing heads and a Cobra Jet intake, and while it was fronted by a Precision 86/85 turbo last year, it will be fronted by a forward-facing Garrett 76mm turbo by Forced Inductions this year. A Transmission Specialties Powerglide spins below the car which rolls on double-adjustable Viking Performance rear shocks, Strange front shocks and Mickey Thompson Street Radial Pros. The Moser Engineering M9 rearend will see a gear change for this year, though Hobson declines to share the specifics. Justin's Performance Center (JPC) and Kevin MacDonald use AEM Infinity to lay the tune. The car is currently at Starting Line Motorsports in Eldon, Missouri, where it's ten-point chrome moly cage is being replaced with a 25.5 chrome moly cage, and the fabrication work is nearing completion. The company also was tasked with setting up the aforementioned forward-facing turbo. I'm a former dirt-racer and I miss class racing, said the St. Louis, Missouri-based Hobson, who's supported in his race efforts by his fiance, Lydia Smotherman. Renegade was my first choice because I like the cars and the combinations, and what they're running. The guys in the class have their set-ups figured out, and I hope I can be in the mix. Tony Hobson Engine Hobson will make his debut in the class at the 16th Annual WyoTech NMRA Ford Motorsport Nationals, April 28-May 1, Maple Grove Raceway in Pennsylvania. We'll give it all we got," said Hobson. "With the JPC team backing me up, I feel confident."
