While Adam Cox is currently in fourth-place in points in Exedy Racing Clutch Modular Muscle, and would like to earn a win this weekend at the 3rd Annual Mickey Thompson NMRA Ford Homecoming at Summit Motorsports Park, he acknowledges that he has already won by having his family here with him. Surrounded by his wife, Amy, children, Aiden and Ashland, mom, Nevada, and parents-in-law, Gene and Susan Glaser, Cox said he is enjoying every moment of this race, and as a bonus, his car is running very consistently. He is currently qualified in the seventh spot out of 16 racers with an .023 reaction time, and he credits help from his family, and Billy Fint, who is also NMRA Coyote Stock racer Jacob Lamb’s crew chief, for being right where he needs to be for competition.
Don Keen of Palmdale, California, has a rich racing history. He acquired his 1968 Cobra Jet from his late father and fellow racer, Al Keen, in 1986, and he earned the NHRA Stock Eliminator championship in 1990 with his father as his crew chief. He continues to race the car with a 428 Cobra Jet engine and Jerico 4-speed, and he has won races and set records. Fans can see him, and the car, in action in the Watson Racing Cobra Jet Showdown this weekend at the 3rd Annual Mickey Thompson NMRA Ford Homecoming at Summit Motorsports Park. Keen is currently qualified in the tenth spot out of 29 cars with an .027 reaction time.
Last night’s Sticker Dude NMRA Reunion Bash Presented by Edelbrock was epic. Hosted by Clarence Barnes, it brought together the legends 5.0 Mustang racing history with today’s NMRA stars for an engaging evening of bench racing in the Granatelli Motor Sports Hospitality Zone adjoined by the Courtyard by Sticker Dude. Tonight the festivities continue in the pits with the Edelbrock NMRA Founders Reunion where racers, media, and sponsors from past and present gather to reminisce and celebrate. In addition to the refreshments, there is interactive fun as attendees compete for bragging rights in the Pro Tree Reaction Time Shootout.
There are a lot of luminaries on the property at the Mickey Thompson NMRA Ford Homecoming. As part of the 40th Anniversary Saleen Reunion, the man himself, Steve Saleen is on the property amid a huge display of classic and modern machines bearing his name. Of course, he carves out some time to sign posters for Saleen fans.
While there are numerous specialty groups in the car show, the traditional UPR Products car show is brimming with cool Fords this weekend at the Mickey Thompson NMRA Ford Homecoming.
Tires are squealing and cones are being carved at the Maximum Motorsports Autocross this weekend. Today, the professional drivers from AutoXperts and Gateway Classic Mustang running the event are also offering free rides around the course. They can provide helmets, so head down and let them show you how fast a Ford can go in the turns.
Not only is the Mickey Thompson NMRA Ford Homecoming a monster event but there are some monster trucks on the property. The original Bigfoot is on hand for photo opportunities, but its stadium counterpart came to crush Brand X machines a 1 and 3 p.m. today.
Jim Johnson has been competing in NMRA ARP Open Comp for many years, and in that time, he has come to know his car and combination very well. That’s why he made the decision to deliver it to Rick Riccardi and Marc Poldino at Redeye Racecars in Florida for some off-season work. Riccardi and Poldino made some suspension upgrades, and installed new AA Performance upper and lower control arms, as well as new AFCO shocks and Strange struts. They also scaled his Mustang, which is powered by a 427 cubic-inch Windsor by Roush Competition Engines and runs mid-9s, and Johnson couldn’t be happier with how his car is performing. “This is the best the car has ever worked,” said Johnson, who is currently qualified in the 27th spot out of 40 cars with an .054 reaction time. “My 60-foots went from 1.38 to 1.27, and the car feels good on both ends of the track. I really owe a lot to Ricky and Marc, and the car is going back to them when the race season is over for even more work.”
Alabama’s Jerry Jones started racing in the NMRA HP Tuners Super Stang class earlier this year, but he’s already picked up a victory with his bright red 2022 Mach 1 Mustang. Jones was admittedly surprised, and admittedly a bit lucky to win the NMRA/NMCA Super Bowl of Muscle Car Drag Racing in St. Louis, but he’ll happily take it.
“I came out this year just to try and have a little fun and hopefully win a few rounds,” said Jones, who travels with his wife, Cindy. “I honestly didn’t expect to win a race, especially this soon. I was thinking a Top 10 finish would be more reasonable. When that win light came on in the final, I couldn’t have been more excited. Other than my wedding and the birth of my kids, I think it was one of the best days of my life.”
Jones isn’t officially retired. He still works as a Project Manager, but he calls his Mach 1 his “retirement car” since it was purchased using Social Security funds. For now, the car is stock with the exception of a set of Nitto R2 drag radials. In addition to HP Tuners Super Stang, Jones also chases the Nitto-backed $1,000 payday in the Circle D Specialties True Street class.
With an unfavorable weather forecast predicted for Sunday afternoon at the 3rd Annual Mickey Thompson NMRA Ford Homecoming at Summit Motorsports Park, NMRA officials have made the decision to start eliminations on Saturday. The fourth round of qualifying for index classes has been cancelled, and all index classes will run the first round of eliminations on Saturday afternoon. The second round of index eliminations could be contested on Saturday evening. All heads-up classes will run the third and fourth rounds of qualifying as scheduled on Saturday, followed by the first round of eliminations early evening Saturday.
