SHOKR Mustang Built To Support RPM ACT Is A Hit At PRI

It’s no secret the government is attempting to put the squeeze of the automotive performance industry. With a push for zero emissions, the folks in Washington want us to “clean up our act,” but there needs to be guidelines that are fair and suitable for enthusiasts and aftermarket manufacturers.

Showing that you can assemble a mindful performance vehicle, Innovation Performance Technologies (IPT) of Aberdeen, North Carolina, builders of brand-new turnkey muscle cars, has completed ShoKr, a fantastic 1989 Mustang LX, built to support the RPM Act.

The RPM Act (Recognizing the Protection of Motorsports) is common-sense, bi-partisan legislation that is being considered by Congress to protect law-abiding citizens who convert their personal vehicles solely for use in racing competitions. It also protects citizens’ rights to purchase emissions-related parts intended to be installed on their racing vehicles.

The RPM Act is designed to protect Americans' rights to convert street vehicles into dedicated racecars and the motorsports parts industry's ability to sell products that enable racers to compete. The bill clarifies that ‘It is legal to make emissions-related changes to a streetcar for the purpose of converting it into a racecar used exclusively in competition.’ It also confirms that it is legal to produce, market and install racing equipment, ensuring legality for what we all do.

“Our Mustang was built combining the processes of recycling, reuse and with a combination of using both factory and aftermarket components using traditional hot rod techniques to build a cool car that has a tiny Carbon Footprint and low emissions,” said Rob Kinnan of IPT. “It’s 100-percent environmentally responsible, especially when compared to an electric vehicle,” said Kinnan.

Features include a widebody to allow an increased footprint, EcoBoost engine and an interior that’s all-modern Mustang. “We have years of experience road racing our ’86 Mustang with a 2.3 EcoBoost so that’s what we went with in ShokR. To make it easier and cleaner we welded in a complete 2019 Mustang firewall and floorpan. That also made room for the 10-speed automatic and all the electronics, which work just like they do in the stock ’19 car, including the backup camera (located in a bracket right where the trunk lock is). That allowed the complete interior (minus airbags) to go in the ’89 Fox. That dash wasn’t even cut, just tailored a little where it meets the windshield. Radio and navigation work too,” added Kinnan.

The suspension is a combination of Maximum Motorsports equipment, with Alcon brakes, which are the biggest name in NASCAR Cup. “They’re monster 14-inch rotors and huge calipers. They’re really too much for this car, but we ensure safety above all other build qualities, and these brakes will throw you through the windshield,” he added. The wheels are 18s from Forgeline and the look is all race car on the Ford Mustang Coupe. But there’s street touches like the custom luggage that’s housed where the rear seat would normally go.

“ShoKr uses a stock 2.3L EcoBoost engine with a stock tune and the car runs really strong,” said Kinnan. “It’s not a race car, but powerful enough to be a fun daily driver.”
