Woodward Or Bust—Five Days in Detroit for SVT and Ford Fun!

Car enthusiasts often talk about epic events and they are quick to state bucket-list items. And depending on your preference, this can range from the Spring Break Shootout, to Mustang Week, to the Daytona 500, Indy 500, Le Mans or Bonneville to name a few. In our opinion, a can’t-miss event is the Woodward Dream Cruise.

Actually, the Dream Cruise, which took place last Saturday, is just one of the many events lumped into the action surrounding Woodward Ave. in late August. The entire week is filled with cruising and different activities.

We had the chance to attend the 30th Anniversary SVT reunion, where many of the engineers, designers, media members and other former team members gathered for a story telling trip down memory lane. There was also a dinner to cap off a great day and it was open to fans who wanted to chat with icons like John Coletti, Dave Dempster, Neil Ressler, Janine Bay and many more.

Each night we hit Woodward and saw what amounted to fantasy come to life—everything imaginable was out on the streets. The big difference between a car show and the cruising found at Woodward is seeing the vehicles in action. You spot them, take in the angles and hear the engines and you never know what’s coming next. That's part of the fun.

Ford had a nice deal for media and guests at Kruse & Muer restaurant where we could drive all the latest performance vehicles and we took advantage, hopping behind the wheel of the FP700 F150 and a few Mustangs. On the day of the cruise we spent the bulk of our time in Mustang Alley, which is the hot spot for any Mustang lover. We ran into Sandy Llievski, Flat Rock Plant manager and Laurie Transou, who is the Ford Mustang Lead Engineer.

Our five days in Detroit closed out at the Mustang Memories car show, held by Mike Rey and the gang at MOCSEM (Mustang Owners Club of Southeastern Michigan) at Ford World Headquarters. This is a monster of a car show with over 800 Blue Oval vehicles in attendance and as a special treat, Ford’s John Clor arranged for a panel of SVT icons to do an autograph signing. In addition, fans saw SVT Cobras, R models and prototypes as well.
